new hdd help?

right. hello.


this guy i know has asked for help choosing a good, reliable harddrive, after his last one [a western digital] died a quick but painful death recently.
he's looking at seagate, atm, but i told him i'd look into other options for him, so i thought i'd ask you people. seeing as you often know stuff about stuff.
he's looking for something around 300-500Gb, minimum a 7200 rpm drive & 16GB cache.
preferably something cheap.

Seagate - quiet, shitty support, dubious reliability.

WD - Louder, slightly more reliable.

The choice is yours between the lesser of two evils.

I've used both, and haven't had a problem with either.

Assuming this is an internal, 3.5-inch form factor drive, this is what I would suggest if he is avoiding WD.

wow, well, seeing as everyone kinda just said "seagate barracuda" just now, i think that's the safest one to suggest!

Well as long as you dont have to deal with support, then they're decent enough (I have two currently).

Unfortunately in-warranty drive death cant be fixed outside of the manufacturers support service, which is fine if you dont mind explaining what's wrong 10 times so that they can keep trying to deny it's their problem.

I have to say i strongly support WD Caviar Black... i currently have one of them as my 1TB multi media drive it is slightly loud but not much louder than your standerd case cooling (excuse my possable misconceptions about noise levels as i also have a 150gb WD raptor that drowns everythign out)

I did have an old IDD seagate drive that wiped once in my 3years of having my old PC... i conclude that WD Caviar is better than seagate because from research it is more reliable and from experiance with my m8s PC the search times appear to be faster with the WD.
