What did everyone think of it?

I'm not a trekkie, so I really don't know how it compares to the rest of the universe of Star Trek. However, I really enjoyed it. The characters were deep, the visuals were some of the best I've ever seen and the plot was fun. I really loved what J.J. Abrams did with the movie. It almost makes me want to watch other Star Trek material. Almost.

Also, I really really really hope this is Zachary Quintos' break-out film. I loved him in Heroes and he was great as Spock. He deserves more recognition.

How about everyone else?

I enjoyed it. Do expect the internet backlash to begin soon though. Most of the trekkies on forums I have been to are split on opinion.

USE THE SEARCH FUNCTI-

No, I'm just kidding. I don't think there are any threads.

I liked it; I'm not a huge fanboy, though I used to watch TNG/Voyager after school because they had cool storylines (albeit very, very stupid ones). Couldn't stand the original series. I was almost ready to scream at the film for being inaccurate, but then they explained the alternate timeline device, and since that's something that Roddenberry would probably use in his writing anyway, that was ok.

The casting was perfectly done, though I couldn't help but sit on the edge of my seat waiting for Syl- I mean, Zachary Quinto to start carving out someone's brain. Also, Chris Pine looks a lot like Stephen Dorff... I mean...

Or maybe that's just me. Anyway, the special effects were amazing (but then again, we're in the 21st century), and Simon Pegg is a deity fit for worship.

The one thing that bugged me was Spock's seemingly increased struggle, though I guess there's always time to flesh out a character's backstory. I mean, Vulcans were never this emotional.

Yeaah.. I'm a Star Wars person, and I haven't seen any Star Trek except for the opening scene of some episodes. Do they all start with: Captain's log: Star date something-something?

Anyway, as I said, I haven't seen any Star Trek, so I don't see any reason why I should see this one either.

Ha, I thought the same thing.

But I'd have to agree on casting. Looking at pictures of the old cast, the new cast looks a lot like them.

I had my hopes up when he did the neck pinch on Kirk. Can't ask for everything, I guess...

I'm happy that Pine gave Kirk a redo, though. He took the humour and kept in character, but at least he didn't try to pull off that dreaded "Stuttering. andthenspeaking. Rapidly," shtick. Some guys seeing the movie with us were chanting for him to talk like that, but I think he would have been borderline imitating Shatner's Kirk if he did so...

Ugh, I would of been so annoyed if Kirk had spoken like William Shatner...that, or very amused.

I personally loved it, although I did have one objection: That being the first proper Star Trek related thing I have ever watched, I felt a bit put out how McCoy was suddenly referred to as "Bones" all of a sudden.

Dude, I though it was awesome. Especially the casting!

Carl Urban was simply perfect as McCoy!

Well, he did say that "All I've got left is my bones." But, I admit, it was a bit sudden.

saw it and was impressed.
they story was good but a little confusing at some times, the special effects were great, acting was well done, and the actor they played the original Spock made an appearance.
i would recommend this to anyone even if there not a fan of the series

I want to see more Star Trek stuff, however, I'm afraid that it won't be as good as this movie...or maybe it will..

Yes I saw this movie yesterday and LOVED it. I dont watch Much star trek otherwise, only when nothing else is on and I want to laugh at poor Special effects. But the cast did their part really well looking like younger versions of the original cast, and they worked so well together. I just loved the cast o_O simon pegg/nicholas angel as scotty was Epic. Sylar as kirk was genius...some random dude as spock was legendary. :p I loved the effects and story was ok I guess...leonard nimoys short appearance as F2T0R$ $P0CKZ was fun too.

Watched it, loved it, watched it again, still loved it. Man this has to be my favourite trek film (alongside Wraith of Khan and First Contact). Although dare I say it, I actually think this is THE best trek film released.

EDIT

Sylar (aka Zachary Quinto) played Spock, Chris Pine played Kirk.

Erm Sylar was Spock. Sorry to be picky but it's very very obvious

I thought it was pretty good. Star Trek was the first nerdy thing I got into, almost 20 years ago now. I probably wouldn't have used some of the plot devices and shake-ups to the status quo that were used, but they pulled it off well enough for my skepticism to be converted. It was a nice addition to the series, which respected the original series, said actors, and the Star Trek mythos in general in all the ways that count.

I also thought the best part of the movie was the casting. You couldn't have done better with anyone else. And for those wondering, "Bones" was McCoy's nickname in the original series.

EDIT: As far as films go, the quality of many of the Star Trek films are debatable. For fans of the original series, the "trilogy" of Star Trek II-IV is good enough to watch at least once, as well as First Contact for The Next Generation fans. However, my personal favorite movie is Star Trek VI. It's equally exciting to this movie, but with the old actors. If this movie is your only Star Trek experience, I'd recommend watching Star Trek VI next.
