Forgive the formatting - posting on mobile, but the link should take you to the latest revelation about Disney's efforts with the much-loved Star Wars franchise, and it looks like we're all set for a yearly churning of new films, which, as we've learned from all ýearly at any cost' IP's, is nothing but a BRILLIANT idea.

So, what do you think? Accepting all opinions, from 'that's great, let's get lots of movies on the go', to 'what the hell Disney, you haven't done yearly installments of any of your other properties, why start with Star Wars, a property already suffering from being spread too thinly and not enough focus being put on things fans actually might want and might make you some cash?

My opinion? Fuck this, Battlefront 3 please.

At this point, disappointed. I'm a fan of both trilogies and the wider Star Wars universe and so I'm excited that there's actually going to be an Episode VII and honestly think Disney could do a good job with this. The yearly release schedule unnerves me though because that seems just too many for each one to be crafted into a worthwhile film, particularly the "focusing on an existing character" films which seem an excuse to cash-in. I have a sinking feeling the newer films could end up forgettable mush, devoid of any of the memorable themes of the original two trilogies.

Battlefront was Lucasarts, and Disney just shut them down.

Sorry :/

As for the film, we'll have to see. Abrahams might make it not horrible, which would be better than the prequels for a start!

Yearly releases? I love Starwars as much as the next guy but i don't want to be saturated up to my eye balls with Starwars films.

I loved the shooter genre but the constant saturation of CoD titles gave me serious fatigue, i don't think i could handle such a thing happening to Starwars

Is this yearly for three years, to complete a trilogy? That's fine, it's not much different from the hobbit and lord of the rings. But if they go on for more than 3 years it'll get really tiresome really fast.

hahaha that was good.

OT: I'd much prefer some good ole star wars games (another kotor, jedi academy, battlefront 3, etc..) but films will do.

they are using a whole new cast of people this time, and it IS disney after all, so i'll give them the benefit of the doubt at first.

Exactly. "Yearly" is just way too much.

The Star Wars franchise is dead to me. At this point I have no interest whatsoever in the new movies. I would like to see them fail miserably, but I know they won't.

OT: I think I'm just done with Star Wars. I love the Trilogy, but everything else about it (except for a few novels) is just a massive disappointment

I thought my version looked too long!
But yeah, I think I'll give next film a shot, if it's crap then I'm gonna save myself the hassle by forgetting the rest.

Uuuuugh. Really? They can't give the projects more polish time? I don't see this ending well.

I think that someone has it out for star wars fans. Why yearly? Why is that necessary?
Money.

It's Star Wars. It will make money.

Considering it's an alternating thing between numbered episodes and spinoffs, I'll give it a chance provided it's not the same studio working on both.

Glad to see everyone complaining about films that do not yet exist.

Like seriously, what if these movies ended up being the greatest things ever? You'd feel silly then wouldn't you?

But I suppose you're right. Disney doesn't have any experience with successfully handling yearly releases for a popular IP.

*cough* Marvel. *cough*

Depending on how they treat the expanded universe this could be really and truly excellent. I'm hesitant to say it will be grand but it's not like we don't get a new season of our favorite shows every year and making one 90minute movie should be easier than than filming 20-24 forty five minute episodes on the same topic.

I for one would love to see something that follows the smugglers and bounty hunters. Even if you only look at the movies and pretend the expanded universe and thus Dash Rendar, Prince Xisor and Tallon Karde don't exist you still have the Hutts and Lando. I can easily see an Oceans 11 style movie about a bunch of smugglers taking on a powerful criminal.

As much as I like the Star Wars films and their games, it's time to let them rest in peace. Keep them away from George Lucas and Disney their ilk - and for the love of all things holy - out of the hands of Bobby Kotick.

I'm cool with that. A movie ticket costs ~$12, so its not like buying a brand new game, and it keeps the actors employed and the franchise going, and if the movies start to falter in quality, then people will stop going and they'll freshen up the brand again to get people back into it. It doesn't really have to be all quite so cynical, and as someone else stated, Disney does a great job with the Marvel franchise, so I think it's in capable hands.

In my heart of hearts I'm hoping Disney would do right by this series (and really anything that comes under its disturbingly fast expanding corporate umbrella) but I'm pretty versed in their practice of synergy and self-promotion and, seeing as how they're also doing prequel origin stories, this era of the franchise has the real potential of skipping past the pre-success experimental Lucas and delve into a circle of hell not even post-success "statistics show JarJar is what the kids want" Lucas could drop into. Even Marvel, as great as they've been doing critically, is always in a precarious situation where one particularly bad single could derail the entire project they've been setting up, especially if it's one of the new characters or teams like Guardians of the Galaxy (and God help them if they throw that Spawn character in there just to sell comics).

As you might gather from my username, Godzilla is my favorite franchise of all time. And as a lifelong Godzilla fan, I predict doom for any other franchise that seeks to oversaturate the market with its works with yearly releases. If Godzilla had been wise enough to understand this, we might have had a consistently great series instead of a paltry handful of brilliant installments obscured by nearly two dozen enjoyably-bad-but-still-bad entries. Star Wars has already fallen prey to this in its related media, if not its films, so it stands very little chance of improvement with Disney running the probable risk of exacerbating the problem this way.
