Hello everyone, I just recently set up a steam account and am now witnessing a steam sale for the first time. I own next to no games, and have ~53$ left to spend on games from steam. The problem is, the games won't be on sale for a long time, and I don't know what to buy! I was hoping since a lot of people on escapist tend to be pc gamers who own steam that maybe you guys could give me a hand picking some games.

In general, I enjoy multiplayer games (I have 3 friends who also just got steam) and I personally enjoy fantasy and RPG games a lot. I'm willing to play just about every type though I am absolutely terrible at shooters (not to say I don't like them.) If anybody could suggest their favorite games or any particularly good deals, I'd be extremely thankful.

Friendly tip.
WAIT TILL THE STEAM SUMMER SALES!
It's bigger, much BIGGER!
save your pennys sir and go for bundles.

If you can't wait for 6 months I'd go for Divinity 2, think Dragon Age mixed with Skyrim.
Fun game and a whole lot of game time.
Bastion is a ridiculously great game, if you haven't played it before do it now.
Dark Souls, hard, unforgiving and fun as a bouncy castle.
Look 'em up before you buy.
And good luck you'll need it.
Don't wanna buy at 33% just before 75% comes up.

If you enjoy fantasy RPGs there's no reason not to buy The Witcher for ?2 (don't know the dollar price).
Trine 1 & 2 are also a lot of fun, it's multiplayer and fantasy AND -75% right now.

Thank you guys. I'm excited for the steam summer sale too, but since I have a whole 6 months to save up and nothing to do in the meantime, I'm not too worried. I already own Divinity 2 for the X-box 360 and think its terrible, but that is mostly due to the controls, which I imagine are less frustrating on the PC so I'm not sure about that one, the other games all look pretty good.

Well it's the same as with any other shop, only ever buy stuff you have use for.
Don't be an imbecile and just throw money away on useless shit because it says sale, there is a lot of stuff Steam doesn't even have the best deal for, or the "sale" is actually a higher price then normal, if you buy shit blind they will also rob you blind.

The Encore sale is still on.
The Portal Franchise is a must.
The Walking dead is also amazing.
Saints Row 3 is great too.
And if you want a good horror Amnesia the Dark Decent.

Also if you go to Http://www.Greenmangaming.com/ you can find a lot of good games that give Steam Keys.

Super Meat boy is on sale. As are the FEAR games.

Bastion is also on Sale there.

AND the site has a promo on right now. Almost everygame can have an additional 20% taken off using the code:
GMG20-PJFEW-Y16HK

Team Fortress 2 is F2P.

Start there. After that, Portal, Walking Dead, Civilization V & XCOM: Enemy Unknown (if Turn-Based Strategy's your thing).

The THQ bundle wouldn't be a bad place to start. Most of the games there are pretty damn good and as far as the price goes, it's one of the best deals you will ever find. However, if you only want to pick up one or two titles from the bundle odds are you get get them cheaper on GreenManGaming with their promo code.

As mentioned above the Portal games are something that every Steam user should own and I would also suggest picking up the Half Life games whenever they go on sale.

If you have any interest at all in The Walking Dead game, pick it up! It's an experience that you won't forget any time soon.

Also Hitman 2 and Hitman: Blood Money are dirt cheap at the moment so they also get a recommendation.

The Valve Complete Pack is damn awesome. I mean, you`ll be getting the Left 4 Dead games, the portal games, all the Half-lifes and lots more. Basically, lots of multiplayer and co-op stuff, and some very awesome singleplayer stuff, as well. So, yeah. Quite the good pack, in my opinion. Isn`t very expensive.

And if you have 3 friends that also just got steam, then Left 4 Dead 1 or 2 is what you might really want. I mean, 4-player co-op is pretty damn fun in my opinion.

Also, Killing Floor is good fun, co-op survival horror. Not in the previously mentioned pack, but it`s good and pretty cheap.

this, and don't be surprised when Special Victims pulls up to question you about claims of abuse filed by your wallet

the game is also snarky at times to, with some horrible puns, you will still giggle at, but you get to fly around as a dragon and blow stuff up as a dragon. :D

other then that, buy what fancys you, chances are its on sale right now to so go nuts :D

Make a wishlist of the games you want. Work from there, because it will tell you the prices of the games on your list. You also can have steam email you if one of your games goes on sale between now and summer.

Other than that, I can't recommend anything while I don't know your tastes. May as well as go with everyone's favorite free2play game Team Fortress 2. That will keep you tided over until summer.

I implore you to get the THQ bundle while it's still available. You get literally 10 full budget games which is enough to keep you busy for months. Civilization 5 and the walking dead won't hurt either :)

First of all, relax. Remember you don't have to buy anything. It's perfectly ok to go without additional games on Steam, regardless of sale prices. Things go on sale at Steam pretty much all the time, and sales recur quite often, so don't be pressured by "limited time offer"s.

Second, never rush to buy something unless it's a flash sale or the time is almost up. Usually if a game you want is on sale, it can and will come up again on a better sale another time. For example, this past week, several games were listed anywhere from 50% - 66% off, but appeared on the daily "flash sale" for 75% off. Flash sales overwrite any current sales, and are usually the better deal.

Third, unless you absolutely must play the game "right now", don't use "Buy for Myself". Use "buy as a gift" and select the option to receive Steam codes. That way, if you decide later that you didn't actually want the game, you can trade it to someone else.

For additional resources, check out The Salebox, youtube personality TotalBiscuit's fairly regular review of Steam sales and helpful commercial advice. He provides general information about the games actually on sale, as well as links to his first impressions series "WTF is... ?", detailing the experiences a new player might have playing said games, on any games in the sale he has covered previously. TB also does the service of noting whether Steam sale prices are actually good value and whether games can be found cheaper elsewhere. It's quite handy.

Of Orcs and Men is a pretty cool action-RPG game.

Far Cry 2 is a fun game too, but requires you to be creative to get the most out of it.

Fallout 3 GOTY and New Vegas will sink at least 60 hours each of your time and you will enjoy it.

Dat Orange Box, you get Portal as well as the HL 2 games, which you should already have.

L4D2 and Payday: The Heist are the pinnacle of 4 player co-op with randomized elements, just choose you flavor; Zombie or Cops! (Or both)

Killing Floor is also some good co-oping. Also, Red Orchestra 2 can be great fun if you want something really different is WWII manshooting. Just be prepared to die alot.

If you find them under 25?, the CoD games will give you one helluva ride in SP and MP if you like high-tempo, arcade-like shooting with silly amounts of content (Black Ops I is my favorite in Multiplayer and Singleplayer is kinda cool too, but CoD 4 has the best SP that I know of in the series.)

Spec Ops: The Line, just look at the ZP review.

Tropico 3 or 4 with the big expansion pack for either, cool little City Building game where you also juggle politics, inter and just national. Simplified yes but still politics.

Mount and Blade: Warband. First person melee fighting finally made good.

planetside 2 is also F2P, but it's hard to run. Everyone else already mention the must haves, but I'll reiterate on a few Witcher 2, Spec ops, Fallout, and valve games

As mentioned already, GET TF2, IT IS WONDERFUL. A few other games I like a lot
portal 1/2
l4d 1/2 (get 2, buying one is kind of a waste since almost all of l4d1 got ported into 2 as dlc)
Half life 1 ,Half Life 2, hl episode 1, 2 (and 3 when it comes out in 2439)
Ace of Spades ( minecraft+ CoD = Fun)
Rage is a good game too
Borderlands naturally
Super Meat Boy/ Binding of Isaac, both fun games

but it's more or less up to you. The Fallout Nv is also recommendable, The Witcher, Terraria if you like building and exploring, Day of Defeat source, Counter strike Source. the possibilities are endless!
