So, apparently the newest Godzilla slipped under the radar a while ago, and no one realized.
My thoughts on this:
Director Hideaki Anno's presence can definitely be felt in this trailer. From the music to the scenes reminiscent of an episode of Neon Genesis, it has his style stamped all over it. This may be a turn off for some people, but I personally couldn't be more excited. Anno is apparently an avid Godzilla fan, and it will be interesting to see his take on the character. At the very least, the writing should be strong.
Apparently there will be no iconic monster battle. Instead the film will focus on the conflict between Godzilla and humanity. This may be disappointing to some fans, but after snoring through the finale of the American Godzilla film I don't really mind. If they can make it interesting then that's good enough for me, and with Anno at the helm, good or bad, no one can say it won't be interesting. Apparently the film will be more in line with the old, original Godzilla films, where Godzilla was less of a guardian and more of a force of nature.
If I had a complaint, it would probably be the appearance of Godzilla. I was weary of his small, gimpy looking arms, and was hoping that the look would be improved on film. Alas, I'm still not a fan. The rest of the character looks scarred and intimidating for reasons that will probably be explained in the film, but those arms are definitely distracting for what looks like an otherwise rather serious film.
As for the special affects, I think they're fine. They look a little cheap compared to American blockbusters, but I assume Japanese films tend to work with a much smaller budget, and I think they're used well. Anno's use of cinematography and use of camera angles looks to be as good as ever, and I thought the scenes of evacuation and destruction were done quite well. Seeing Godzilla lumbering through a crowded city captured his sense of scale quite nicely.
Overall I'm rather excited for the film, and I will probably buy it upon release. While the special effects are somewhat lackluster, the writing and directing pretty much guarantee that it will be better then the last movie, which had amazing special affects, but still managed to be as interesting as a wet slice of bread. Your thoughts?
