So, apparently the newest Godzilla slipped under the radar a while ago, and no one realized.

My thoughts on this:

Director Hideaki Anno's presence can definitely be felt in this trailer. From the music to the scenes reminiscent of an episode of Neon Genesis, it has his style stamped all over it. This may be a turn off for some people, but I personally couldn't be more excited. Anno is apparently an avid Godzilla fan, and it will be interesting to see his take on the character. At the very least, the writing should be strong.

Apparently there will be no iconic monster battle. Instead the film will focus on the conflict between Godzilla and humanity. This may be disappointing to some fans, but after snoring through the finale of the American Godzilla film I don't really mind. If they can make it interesting then that's good enough for me, and with Anno at the helm, good or bad, no one can say it won't be interesting. Apparently the film will be more in line with the old, original Godzilla films, where Godzilla was less of a guardian and more of a force of nature.

If I had a complaint, it would probably be the appearance of Godzilla. I was weary of his small, gimpy looking arms, and was hoping that the look would be improved on film. Alas, I'm still not a fan. The rest of the character looks scarred and intimidating for reasons that will probably be explained in the film, but those arms are definitely distracting for what looks like an otherwise rather serious film.

As for the special affects, I think they're fine. They look a little cheap compared to American blockbusters, but I assume Japanese films tend to work with a much smaller budget, and I think they're used well. Anno's use of cinematography and use of camera angles looks to be as good as ever, and I thought the scenes of evacuation and destruction were done quite well. Seeing Godzilla lumbering through a crowded city captured his sense of scale quite nicely.

Overall I'm rather excited for the film, and I will probably buy it upon release. While the special effects are somewhat lackluster, the writing and directing pretty much guarantee that it will be better then the last movie, which had amazing special affects, but still managed to be as interesting as a wet slice of bread. Your thoughts?

Well...

its looking like this is a 'wounded' godzilla, and some hints i've seen say we'll be seeing him rejuvenated. theres also a spoilery gif going around, which if real..
this rejuvenated godzilla going all Fifth Angel on tokyo with his atomic breath with pretty destructive results

That would be really interesting. Wasn't Godzilla created by a nuke or something? I know he's served as a metaphor for nuclear weapons before. I wonder if they'll go with that, or if he'll serve as metaphor for nature.

Either way, that's actually sounds like an interesting ending. I would be fine with that. It's not like they were going to kill him anyway. I'm not sure how else it would have played out.

I just want this movie to finish so he can go back to work on Rebuild of Evangelion Final or 3.0 + 1.0

How did he ended up directing the next Japanese Godzilla movie?

Because he fell back into another deep depression after he started remaking Eva. Apparently it got so bad that he stopped going to work for a year, and he spent every day at the therapist. The rebuilds were a stupid idea, I don't think he should have made them. Not because I'm hating on them, but because Neon Genesis would have to hold some very painful memories for him. He nearly killed himself after he finished the original story. Why he would want to embroil himself back in those painful memories is beyond me. I assume Godzilla is his attempt to put some distance between himself and Eva. He clearly doesn't want to work on it anymore. He's probably trying to get his creative spark back by working on something he enjoys. Kenaro Miura did the same thing with Berserk.

End of Eva is my favorite film of all time, but I'd really rather see him work on something different from now on.

WRONG! There's no random shots of bicycles or stopsigns in the rain while someone's waxing poetic about human interaction.

Oh my God, that would almost by funny if it wasn't awful.

Wait- was it the lousy 2014 American Godzilla movie that disappointed you, or the awful 1998 one? My countrymen just don't understand Godzilla, I guess (though in fairness, the Japanese did once have him beaten by a gorilla one-tenth his size, with no special powers other than "being really big, for a gorilla"). I question, though, how much can really be done with Godzilla as a "character"; the only times he's more than just an unstoppable force of nature are in the later movies, wherein he's fighting another monster, and even that's rather limited.

Hold your horses. The movie isn't even out yet. If we know one thing for sure it's that every Anno film has to have depressed people in the rain and trains serving as a metaphor for... something.

Yeah, for a smart guy, he's pretty stupid sometimes. I can sympathize with him though. Maybe he should go back to romcoms.

I look forward to the scene where Godzilla has to save the world, but then he has an existential crisis instead.

I don't know. Godzilla movies have always focused on the human drama, since Godzilla is basically a big lizard with thunder thighs. My issue is that most of the human drama, especially from American films, has been really boring. Then, when you finally get to the big epic monster battle, it's just kind of slow and disappointing. Both American Godzilla movies were rather bad, but the 2014 was probably worse for me.

For the most part I like what I'm seeing, but I can't get behind Godzilla itself. Say what you will about the American Godzilla films, but the 2014 one at least pulled out all the stops to bring the king of monsters to life. This one? It just doesn't feel right to me. And not in a good way.

It's been a while, remind me... Isn't that the one where Ferris Bueller, Moe Szyslak and Leon the Professional team up to play basketball against the Godzilla Globetrotters?

Cue then the theater erupting with cries of "GET IN THE EVA, GODZILLA!"

Of all the variations on the Eva, never before have I ever seen anything that is so soul-crushing in its horror induced within me.

Huh, they're shootin' at his feet and his head, so they're trying to either kill him or... trip him.
Perfectly viable strategies, to be sure, I just like to think Big G is thinkin'

"Ow, my face. Ow, my ankles. Midsections fine though."

Anyway. Purple atomic breath, that looks neat. And it's interesting to see the energy building up in his whole body rather than just his fins.
