Speculate, if you will. And I don't mean next 'big' genre, I mean an entirely new genre that is different from the currently established ones. With the popularity, ease, and frequency associated with indie games, games have become a creative outlet and the old genres are being pushed to their limits. What's an entirely new way to play a game?

Perhaps mind-controlled games? You know like that MindBall game that's sometimes at science museums and stuff - where you're two players wired up to a brain monitor that measures your alpha and beta waves and, the more relaxed you are, the more the ball rolls towards your opponent. If the ball touches their "goal" you've scored. Maybe these kind of controls could be used in games somehow.. Anyone feeling creative and can come up with some use for this crap? I'm not.

You're given a mic and have to control your character's actions through voice commands and narration.
Nice

Perhaps some kind of 'Create' genre, where you somehow design buildings, food, or other things to keep some people happy. And I don't mean like SimCity where all the buildings are made for you and you just plop them down, no, I mean as in everything is designed by you, complete and total control, no way any building is the same.

Improv Hero. Multiplayer only. The host comes up with a game for the panel to play. Funniest player wins.

Hopefully people branch off with the role-playing shooter. I know Fallout 3 did it but it was more RPG than shooter. I know BioShock did it but it was more shooter than RPG. Probably one of the best examples of a perfectly balanced role-playing shooter is Borderlands and I've already beaten it. I wish more games were like it.

So kinda like Spore? But... good, rather than painful?

No offense or anything... but Borderlands, while a very, very good game, it only has a small, minuscule amount of RPG elements... Leveling... You only get one skill... The inventory system kinda sucks...

OT: A kamikaze sim. Except it's real :]

Actual OT: Maybe something involving you using a laptop to hook up with a console game and then using the laptop to control missiles and guns and stuff to help out the console player...?

There was already a game like that on the PS2, I can't remember what it was called, but it was fucking horrible.

So no... Just, no.

I was just thinking that, a quick google turned up a game called lifeline. I'm not sure if it's the game I was thinking of though, I don't remember it having a Sci-fi theme. I'm sure there was one that involved an earthquake and a woman trapped in a building or something along those lines that used the same control method.

What about a sex sim where the contoller is a fleshlight for males and a dildo for females? Rated AO of course.

And only sold at porn shops? Could be an untapped gold mine, I should call Vivid Video...

I demand a name so that I can hunt down a copy and try it for myself.

I think we have got to the point now where no other original genre is going to be found. From here on out, it will be mixes between different genres (Borderlands being a good example of this). Even if a dev team does dream up a new genre, most likely there's only going to be two reactions that gamers will have. Either 1)They will embrace the new genre and shower it with praise and money or 2)They will disregard it entirely and will want it to sit in the corner wearing a dunce hat.

That is just screenwatching in local multiplayer.
For those of you who feel like discussing the genre that will dominate next generation:

dont really know what "Genre" is going to be popular. I know that DLC and Episodic gaming will be the way of the future.

Why release a full game for 60 dollars, when you can release half a game for 60 dollars, and then release the extra content later for an extra 5-10 dollars?

The gaming industry is a commercial art, and we are getting close to "perfection" in the medium. have enough people buy the content, and string them along, reaching into their pockets the entire way.

lol I like it, press up or down on the d-pad to change positions, press x to slap ass, give your partner(s) orgasms by racking up combos, there could even be "dialogue" options!

OT how a/b a fully 3d fighting game? Probably a bad idea but it could make playing w/ more than 2 ppl work better

Killgannon posted the game's name after my original post, it's called Lifeline, I can't stop you from buying it if you really want to, but don't say I didn't warn you.
