Yesterday, an NHL (National Hockey League, for those who don't know) playoff game between the Washington Capitals and the Boston Bruins ended with the Washington Capitals winning in overtime. Several fans were angry about this, though, and started posting racist tweets on Twitter towards Joel Ward, the player who scored the goal.

I really don't know why people stoop this low.

I like how it's said "Joel ward, 42, scores...". Bet some people went "What, he's that old?". But yeah that's something that should have no place in sport, but you can't really stop fans taking out their anger at their team losing like that. Best outcome here would be for the Bruins team to come out and say "Guys, not cool."

Not much more that can be done, really.

I am disappoint. I had hoped hockey would be above such pettiness.

Because people are assholes, and all the butthurt bandwagon Bruins fans were too drunk to think about what they were saying

Its Bawwwwston, what do you expect. Its just part of anything as high profile as the NHL playoffs, there are true fans who will just quietly accept that their team lost, and there are the Bandwagoning assholes who ruin it for everyone with all their bullshit. Also, there are racists out there, and they can use twitter, this shouldn't be shocking.

Hockey is a pretty white sport so this doesn't surprise me. I don't think this sort of thing would have a likely chance of happening in, say, the NBA or the NFL.

What? Hockey fans are saying loud, mean, hurtful things because they know they can do so with no consequences what-so-ever?

WE SHOULD ALERT THE MEDIA!!!

...in all seriousness, I'd like to say this surprises me, but after some of the stuff I hear about, this sadly seems kinda tame. Doesn't make it any better though.

Oh, and I'm a hockey fan, myself so...yeah, hockey fans are loud.

It's a lot harder to say racists things when you lose when half (or more) of your team is also black.

I think soccer has had the same problem.

I was thinking more along the lines of "If you enjoy these sports, you're less likely to be a racist because you that culturally these sports have large numbers of minorities."

Eh, I don't think that's necessarily the case. Maybe more so for basketball, but football is still very popular in the same places that have lots of racism. Especially because the most public player in football teams is still a disproportionately white position.

perhaps. I don't have a deep knowledge of popular sports, so I'll defer to your knowledge on this point.
