Hello fellow Escapists,
What are your thoughts about Nigeria? I am asking in the most generalized sense possible, I'm not relating to any specific events. For example, have you ever heard of Lagos or Abuja? Do you know which country claimed it as a colony? Have you witnessed the news reports about Biafra? What about the Oil wars? I'm interested in how you see nigeria!

I have no knowledge what so ever about Nigeria besides that it lies in West Africa along with the Ivory Coast and that we managed to beat them in the 2002 World Cup.

Greatest schoolday ever.

Nigerians run FAST!

And I think France took it as a colony...back in the day.

Nigeria? Oh hey! Some general wanted to give me some money from there.
Gave him my bank details so he could put it straight in.
Just waiting to hear back from him. I've got a good feeling about this!

Actually, it was Britain :) They occupied North and South Nigeria. But France also finds a part in this history, because Britain always did its best to keep it from them because Britain owning Nigeria was a major annoyance for France- This was almost all the significance Nigeria had for Britain.

I have no feelings one way or the other. Why? Nigera is a country not worth the effort. It is a relativly small country with nothing that interests me. I really do feel that way about all countries in Africa. Really, there is nothing there that holds my interest or anything spectacular in any way possible. Therefore I cannot like or dislike it.
Are you interested in the Near to Middle East? To be honest, most people are interested in those countries because of their oil... did you know Nigeria is the 10th biggest oil producer in the world?

I know that the rightful Nigerian prince is going to pay back my investment a hundredfold when he reclaims his position!

...

What?

I know Nigeria is the gun-running capital of Africa. At least according to Burn Notice. I also read "Things Fall Apart." It takes place in Nigeria during the British Colonization, and it shows some parts of the tribal culture.

I know of Nigeria, leaving aside spam and hairy moments in games of Scrabble. The president has a fairly odd name, Good Luck or something like that. Not sure without Googling. Its in the Commonwealth, got independence in the early Sixties and collapsed into civil war by the mid Sixties. Not sure of circumstances though.

Population of a hundred and sixty million people and a GDP nearing USD400 billion (greatest in sub-Saharan Africa) would beg to differ, but whether it interests you is none of my concern.

OT: Well, I express a certain ambivalence towards Nigeria. Most of the average citizens are very friendly people (of whom I know a fair few), but corruption is rife and Boko Haram is turning into a real problem.

It is an African country, somewhere in west africa. As horrible as it sounds, all African countries are sort of merged into one in my mind except for events that have happened in different countries. So no, I know pretty much nothing about Nigeria.
