So lately I've been watching the new TMNT series on Nick and have noticed that every time they run, they do that "ninja run" thing. You know, where they lean forward real far and let their arms blow in the wind behind them. I see this ALL the time in the shows/animes I watch and I have even seen it popping up more and more in video games/game trailers.
So my question is, where did this come from exactly? Was running that way actually something real ninjas did/were rumored to do? If not, then where did it come from? When did it first show up? Is there any type of advantage to running with such a bizarre form?
If I remember correctly, isn't pumping your arms is an INCREDIBLY important thing to do while sprinting? So is the decision to just let them dangle in the wind really wise? Plus, whats with the leaning? Is it to offset your center of gravity because of your strange arm placement or is it to get a lower profile/reduce wind resistance or something?
What do you guys think? Does anyone know where/when this thing originated from? Are there some actual historical cases of people being taught/performing this "ninja run" technique or is it just something that has caught on recently because it looks cool?
--I for one have always thought it to be silly looking. I mean, unless you are going as fast as Sonic (who starts to do it at high-speeds as well) I just don't see the reason why you would want to run anything like that--
Just curious...
