So... the thing is out rigth now, and how bad is it ?

honestly, not too bad actually. First, it's cheap. 25$ (in canada), and it's possible to redeem gold coins with it, i had like 7$ worth of gold coins so it costed me a little bit less. the switch update, the controllers update, and off we go...

First, online gaming. duh we all know what it is. and i see a lot of people complaining that we have to pay for it now, but at the same time nintendo was very clear from the start that we would have to pay, so it's not a surprise...

cloud saving. it's really not as bad as people seems to think. the saves are sent to the cloud as soon as you leave a game (but i had to manually save all my games first). you can download back your saves at will from the cloud. almost all my games do backup. skyrim, south park, octopath, mario odyssey, kingdom battle, labo, la noire, bomberman, mario kart, pacman championship, bayonetta, doom... the only two games that doesnt backup in my library are fortine and splatoon 2.

NES games : ok, we have played those games to death, and it fun to play for like 20 minutes, but it get old pretty fast. but the menu is well done, the way you access the games is really well done, you can save you game on the spot and load the save later. Nintendo know how to make retro gaming well you must give them that. however, you can only play online games with friends. you cannot join a random stranger session. it would have been nice to play tecmo ball with strangers.

finally the special offers... right now it's only the nes controller, but that's useless.

So, yheah not bad. not xbox live or psn level, but it's a good start for the price.

Not being a surprise doesn't mean it's still OK though. The real question is: what did they add that wasn't there when it was free? Adding something really good after starting charging? THAT would be a surprise.

Paying with Nintendo coins isn't a good deal either (compared to using money saved by buying used games).

It's bleh. It's very bleh. NESflix is a good idea but A. it needs more games and B. it needs games outside the NES.

And it needs Virtual Console if you want to own those games permanently. I mean, what happens when the servers inevitably go down?

Well, all my Switch games are singleplayer and there aren't any (upcoming) games with online components that interest me (the online parts, not necessarily the game as a whole). The cloud saves don't particularly interest to me either, since I use my Switch as a home console and I have a big fat SD card to back-up my data to. And the number of NES games I think are worth playing can be counted on one hand.

Put simply, for me personally, Nintendo online service is not a good enough value proposition in its current state. That's fine tho, I'm just not the target audience and others may get more mileage out of it.

There are 0 reasons that playing online games should cost money (I'm already paying for my internet), it's just pure greed.

Riiiiight, because how many subscription services are there on PC? In fact, isn't there an ENTIRE GENRE based around paying a subscription in order to play it that is mostly centered on the PC platform? If anything I find most problems with modern gaming can be traced back to PC gaming and its mindset
