Maybe I'm just stupid for not knowing this, but is there a specific reason as to why square enix refuses to remake FFVII? I cant see why not because if they do I'd personally sell my house to buy it. Is there another reason? Because money is clearly not the issue.

Square Enix might be afraid to ruin there best creation, since of course all the new ones i hear about apparently suck. Square might be afraid they don't have it anymore

It was their best selling game ever so I am also wondering. But they said it would take too long and would be too expensive.

What Shamus thinks about it:

It is a good point I guess, maybe we will see it on the 3DS or NGP. Don't see what the big obsession is with Final Fantasy IV though, it seems to be their favourite.

One could be fear of backlash coupled with the huge loss of money from ff14. Otherwise I think they just want to finish the crystallis trilogy before they start on a big FF project.

The question is, why do people want a remake? If it's because of the graphics, remember that good graphics do not make a good game, and while FF7 is OK, it's not that great either. Its popularity is mostly due to nostalgia, IMO.

While a remake for FF7 would almost automatically generate stupid amounts of cash, messing the game up could bury SquareEnix's reputation for good with the fans. FF7 fans are very passionate about their favourite game, and will be very vocal about anything that doesn't please them.

This all assuming that SquareEnix still has a soul and cares to make good games of course for their fans.

I have heard that updating the system and the graphics to PS3 levels would take an immense amount of time and put a serious strain on the system hardware. I'm not sure how valid that is, but it is what the director of 13 said.

Bassicly this. Its probly why final fantasy 13 was just a straight line with some shiny backgrounds 90% of the time, the huge levels and world maps and such from old RPG's just require way too much work for modern graphics.

Personally, I think the best thing to do on an FF7 remake(besides a new translation) would be to KEEP pre-rendered backgrounds. On the PS3, not only would the probably be freakin' beautiful, they'd be way cheaper than full 3D.

I haven't a clue, but all the speculated reasons are completely wrong. It would take forever and cost a fortune, but they'd make it back and then some in preorder sales alone.

I'm not sure if that's true, considering games like Just Cause 2 that have a huge area to mess around in, and they don't get slow downs or any problems while looking beautiful.

The thing people love about the old FF games is the ability to run around in the open world. People also expect that the graphics are up to scale. Here's the thing, there isn't enough room on a multilayer disk to have that much information and companies are trying to completely phase out disk switching. So, you get a choice, do you take the updated graphics and lose the world or do you take the world and have sub-par graphics (something Square refuses to do)?

Square has dangled that carrot WAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYY back when they released a graphically improved rendition of it as a PS3 tech demo. The fans should stop asking for it and SE should stop trolling them.

Because they're busy with other projects, so assembling the old team would be incredibly hard. And then making the graphics in a world so heavily based around exploration in a big epic world where you can see to the end of the horizon would take extreme amounts of work and time. And it wouldn't sell as well as some might think, as we've already experienced the story and gameplay. Do you think people would pay for nothing but improved actors and voice acting when they could just play their good old PS1 version?

I would almost say as soon as I get remakes of far superior FF titles (FF 4 and 6), but I prefer my nostalgia to be untouched by the sully hands of the SE guys who have been producing the FF drivel they have been making lately.

Well, you're one person, and while your opinion is valid and important, many people including me love FFVII. Nostalgia aside, it's well written, beautifully designed and while the game play gets repetitive with the combat, it has a few sprinkles of variety here and there. And the fact that I could play through all the 80 hours to complete it I think shows that nostalgia doesn't weigh that much. Nostalgia usually gives me enjoyment for an hour or two until I realize that the game I'm playing is actually pretty bad.

I think the reason Square is so adamantly against it is because people seem to be insisting on a full-on PS3 overhaul. Anyone with even a passing familiarity with Square knows that this isn't how they handle remakes. While I don't doubt that it would sell very well, it probably would be prohibitively expensive, not to mention the fact that it would pull attention away from Square's flagship title of the moment.

Now, handhelds, on the other hand... That's a whole different ball game, isn't it? Look at the DS; both FFIII and IV got remakes, and not just "shinier graphics!" touchups, either. They got completely made over, with sprites swapped out for polygons and text for voice acting and everything... And that was on a console with power roughly equivalent to that of the Nintendo 64.

Given the alleged power of the 3DS and Square's mounting financial and critical hardships, I have very little doubt that we'll be seeing FFVII: 3DS or something very soon, and frankly, I'm okay with that. Jumping from PS1 visuals to what is essentially a portable Wii is enough of an upgrade for me. Those hyper-realistic visuals wouldn't have suited FFVII, anyway.
