A simple enough question, is staying awake for 1 week straight dangerous? I made a bet with a couple of my friends about it.

No I won't be driving or doing anything that I shouldn't be, also I'm not doing drugs.

I think it is after like 3 days you have a chance of dying from sleep deprevation.

Yes its dangerous. Its deadly. Although chances are you'll just end up passing out before you die, but it is not a good thing. At all.

You would be incredibly, dangerously exhausted. I don't think you can even make it that long without sleep before your body literally refuses to stop working. I'm not sure how you would stay awake that long, but it would definitely require fucking up your body some way. So yes, it would be dangerous.

There have been a number of studies on this (I'll let you find 'em yourself). In short, yes. It's dangerous. After about 24 hrs of no sleep you're comparably affected to drinking roughly 10 standard drinks (off the top of my head). It doesn't improve.

Actually, I have read a few studies that showed that after 8 days that happens. Some guy went 11 days without sleep and it had no effects on his body or mental state.

I have powerful willpower.

You'd likely die, 11 days is the absoulte longest anyone has SURVIVED. Even if you do, the brain damage won't be worth the bet.

Fie to all of the negative posters! Sleep is a completely optional part of life! Not only have I not slept in two months, I'm completely alert! In fact, I'm even more alert than everyone I know! I've started to see colors that they don't even know to exist!

Due to the nature of my work, I was once up for 74 hours with only 2 hours of sleep throughout. By the end of it, I was not a pretty sight. Frankly, I don't think you'll be able to do it. A few days in and you'll fall asleep wherever you are sitting, regardless of how uncomfortable the seat may be. Longer than that, and you'll start getting drowsy even while standing up.

Of course, this is all dependent on the person but I would not advise anyone to do this.

There is. I've never done it for more then 96 but under 120 hours. its not so much being without the sleep thats dangerous (initially, the longer the more like you'll die from it) but the dangers of the effects it takes on your mind, coupling with things you may do like driving.

Internet is a great tool use it.
current record is 260 hours using the great tool of the internet
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Randy_Gardner_%28record_holder%29
after that you'll have microsleeps
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsleep
which can be so short that nobody notices them
so unless your friends are super vigilant
i'd say you might be able to pull it off

You won't die but you may blackout in a compromising situation. If you have to do it, pick a sponsor who can make sure you won't get into trouble.

As far as I know, the current record holder for the longest time spent without sleep is Randy Gardner. He lasted about eleven days.

My personal recommendation: Don't try it. It screws with your body's natural systems like jet lag, only it lasts for weeks instead of a day or two.

It's not physically dangerous, but it is extremely damaging to your psyche. The average person starts to hallucinate around day 5 or so, and going beyond that can start causing permanent mental problems.

I strongly advise against it, as it's really not worth the risk, regardless of what the bet is actually for. If you actually do it and make it through with your mental faculties intact, let me know how it was.

I think the record is 200 hours or something like that. This is just from my head and I may just be making it up, but I remember hearing something like that in Psychology. It was some radio announcer in the 50's. He started seeing things like spiders crawling all over him and was very delusional.
EDIT:
