Ok lets not get into the ethics of plagerism...

So here is the story, I am in a game design class, and I plagerized, my teacher caught me, but when he graded me I got fair marks for my work (83%) and he didn't report me. Even though my school has a harsh policy agaist it.

I cant figure out why my teacher didnt report me.

Note*
-I have no personal relationship with my teacher.

-I have skipped half of the classes.

-I have very good grades overall.

Why not ask him? He's the only one that knows... maybe he thought giving an initial warning would be better for you than throwing you to the anti-plagiarism wolves for a first time offence?

Don't look a gift horse in the mouth?

What was it exactly you plagiarized? An essay? Code? Either way, maybe just ask your teacher about it, maybe you can redo whatever work you handed in if you're so inclined.

Besides that, don't do it again.

I haven't been hearing good things about game design courses, a generalisation mind you, but most of them seem to be poorly structured and taught by people who don't even know half the stuff they should be teaching or who don't particularly care either way.

You got lucky, and frankly I wish you would have been caught. I know my school isn't nearly as harsh as it should be, and most people that are higher in the class than me have copied my work at one time or another. I just need to leave my stuff on my desk for 15 seconds and suddenly everyone has pictures of my notes. Most of the time they don't wait for me to leave it sitting on my desk.

I noticed you didn't mention how often you plagiarize and don't get caught. If you do regularly plagiarize, stop. It makes everything easier, and you may get off easy now, but it will bite you in the ass later. At least, I hope it will.

Lucky son of a gun! My school has a zero-tolerance policy that's strictly enforced. They have to put your paper into a special program and if it pulls up to high on plagiarism they have to send it to the ethics people. If not they get fired.

Anyway for your situation, Gothmogll got it. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth and don't do it again.

Yeah, the guy who was head of game design when I was planning on doing it didn't even have a degree in game design. I think it was math or something. Sure they are related but still, game design degree or at least a graphic design degree would be better. He also seemed to care more about joking around than anything else. Glad I went with a different path.

It probably involves a fair amount of work actually reporting a student and seeing the whole thing through, compared to not doing anything. Also it does depend on how much you've plagiarised and whether it was intentional - if we're talking a few sentences then I doubt anyone would get anything more than a slap on the wrist, but if we're talking paragraphs it's a different story.

Heh, lot of plagiarism in the last course I did. Mind you, this was because they cut the time for the course in half, but kept most of the content, so the teachers ended up not bothering a bit towards the end.

Who knows?

Maybe he wasn't sure you plagiarized, or it wasn't too bad or something that might have been hard to prove.

Why are you asking strangers on the net?
Ask the teacher.

Simple rules in situations like this. Realize that if it was the real world you wouldn't get punished for it. HOWEVER, you should bloody well be smart enough to actually put some effort in your work because when you are now applying for jobs they don't care about what grades you have but the content of your portfolio.

Don't plagiarize again and take your studies more seriously and take the time to actually build a portfolio that can be incorporated into class projects and such.

It is probably true the effort to report students is indeed more work than it needs to be especially when there has to be investigations and such. That certainly is a potential factor. But once again, you should be better than this because the moment you are out of those school doors it isn't that teacher's problem anymore, it is only your problem. So don't waste what little time you have to prove to future you and employers that you are valuable in a difficult job market and don't plagiarize.
Considering the massive lawsuit we've seen I wouldn't be so sure you wouldn't get punished for it...

OT: Over here you would get kicked out and be blacklisted by all the universities for 2 years if you were caught. That's why I am careful to always cite sources when I use them and never copy things. Although with some formulas getting identical as everyone else is (hopefully) a good thing since there's a right answer for the questions.

It's called Mercy, being spared from what you deserve. It's a rare and precious thing in this world.

Don't take it for granted, you likely won't get a second chance if you plagiarize again, and other professors will not be so lenient.

Mercy is not something I am used to. All my life anytime something goes bad it goes to the point of extreme...

I guess that?s why I am having such a hard time processing this.

Some teachers recognize how damaging it can be. Between the one extreme of going scot free, (and they don't have to do any paperwork, bicker or argue with anyone) or having a student basically kicked out of school, I can see a lot of professors just choosing not to report students. People generally don't want to hurt people, and put in that position, you'd have had to really piss me off before I could turn you in easily.

Your teacher isn't a complete twat bent out to ruin your life, that's why. Maybe they've been in your position before and wants to help you out. This is basically a warning though, never do it again or else he or whoever else may not be as forgiving.

You're going through the enormous hassle (and likely huge expense) of studying. If you can't be bothered to try, why are you there in the first place?
I can think of a few perfectly valid reasons.

Jobs don't grow on trees and these days even a job a trained monkey could do usually have way higher requirements than they should. Even shitty entry level positions for office work require a bachelor's degree and 2 years experience in a lot of places. A lot of people are going to college not because they're interested in learning, and not because they are actually going to use anything taught by their major, but because they need the damn piece of paper that says they went to college, even if their job has absolutely no relevance to what they studied.

In a situation like that why would people try? If you're not planning on working in a field that's actually related to your major (like about 80% of college students) then why would you give the least bit of a fuck? You would do the least you have to in order to get the piece of paper you're required to have for whatever job you want. C's get degrees after all. That's one of the reasons that plagiarism is just a huge problem these days. For a lot of people college is just an extension of high school, something they don't have much of a choice about and therefore don't really care about.

Not necessarily true for the OP, just giving some insight as someone who is horribly jaded because of the entire system of higher learning in the US.
