Note taking and the teacher.

So it had come across to me today while I sat in my first class of the day: chemistry, and we had gotten back out chapter packets with scores, upon looking at my notes score It came across as 50%, upon asking the teacher on why I received this score ( I had followed the guidelines) she stated my notes were crappy and I needed to take better notes. It now comes to this, why do teachers dictate what is good notes or not? shouldn't good notes be decided by the person going to use them (I.E the student) and if they may appear crappy to you, but work excellent for me, then shouldn't that could as good notes?

tell her that her perspective of what good notes are is not a sufficient reason to lower your grade. personally i'd do one of two things being the stubborn ass that i am. A) take it up with her boss or B) Make her life a living hell. Most likely since option A never seems to work for me, pouring purple paint and bleach on her back lawn would most certainly make that 50% worth it

My English teacher is something like that =/ I don't take notes, ever, as I find they detract from whatever it is I'm taking notes on and I end up learning less, but my English teacher... and damn near every other teacher... finds that note taking is the single BEST thing invented EVAR. Which is exceptionally annoying and detrimental to my grade

All my teachers mandate notes for grades, which is utter bullocks because I take horrible, scribbly notes that meander along the page, and get docked points. Especially since it's not in their "proper" format.
Then I get A's on their tests.

Great analysis, it fits my spanish 3 teacher awesome. He was an angry old man mad about how he didn't win the olympic soccer match in the seventies. So he'd never give points for quiz/test questions you got wrong when he never gave you the material in the first place.

Wait, you get graded on the notes that you take in class? That's...insane. Or insanely stupid, at least. If I had ever had my notes graded I would have gotten a big fat 0% because they only would have been legible to me. I developed my own form of shorthand to keep up with a couple of history classes that I took in which the prof refused to use the textbook to educate us. Honestly, what's the point? Performance on tests and displaying comprehension of the subject seem like they're far more important to me.

Bah, I hate notes. How do you stand that? I'm a test-taker. I can't remember ever getting below 80% on any test in my life, and usually it's a lot higher. But I don't take notes.

I hate you. One of my best friends also has this "photographic memory" it makes me jealous to the absolute max.
OP your right about the whole different styles work for different people (it's been scientifically proven) and also graded notes are bullshit, they are called notes for a reason.

That said, my notes are fragmented and complicated. They work for me. However, my teachers could care less about my notes. The only thing they care about is that I turn everything in on time and do well on my quizzes and tests.

i find i learn better when not taking notes. most of my classes are sciences and maths so i sit back, follow the problem in my head until i understand the problem to its core. then copy down anything thats weird that ill need to remember.

I tend to remember stuff better if I actually pay attention to the lecture, rather than furiously transfer it to the page - that tends to end in a scribbled mess I don't understand, and no memory of the actual lesson.

Of course, I'm in post-secondary arts now, so the few notes I take are on my laptop. Boo yah.

I've had this problem in my physical science class, but I got better with it and do well now. It's annoying, but thankfully the class is otherwise awesome.

Eh, I have heard of this mandatory/graded notes phenomenon. And yes notes should be determined by the note taker and not based on some generalized format... that's pretty commie if you ask me. Anyways, some of the people who have experienced this said graded notes is usually a replacement for homework.

This, this, a thousand times this. You have no idea how much trouble I've gotten in for not taking notes in classes...

I hated the grade school insistence on note taking classes that we had between real subject material. So yea I've had a similar problem but it think it comes down to how comfortable you are with the way in which you take notes.

Notes are there for studying for the person taking them, so should fit best for the student taking the notes. What works for one person may not work for another. This is why what the OP is going through with his teacher is just stupid.
