The number of child pornography cases and victims soared to record highs in the first half of this year, a police survey showed Thursday, with Japan failing to create effective countermeasures despite criticism that it proliferates child porn images via the Internet. The number of victims rose to 218 over the six months through June, up 51.4% from the same period last year, and the number of cases police found hit 382, up 27.3%, according to the National Police Agency survey.

Japan does not prohibit the possession of child porn images and faces international criticism for being child pornography?s global supplier through the Internet. Recent parliamentary debate to tighten regulations on child pornography came to a halt as the House of Representatives was dissolved in July for a general election.

The agency attributed the sharp increases in the figures partly to enhanced crackdown efforts, but still called it ??only the tip of the iceberg.??

The survey showed the number of people found involved in producing and distributing child pornography rose 53.7% to 289.

Meanwhile, cases of child abuse crackdowns dropped slightly from the record figure marked in the first half of last year to 157, down 3.1%, involving 165 suspects, the same as in last year?s survey. The number of child deaths caused by abuse was 11, down 62.1%, it said.
Any thoughts? This surprises me. I didn't know Japan was full of pedophiles! *looks up definition of "loli"* Oh.

Do you know if they made any changes to child pornography laws (or better:what is described as child pornography in the law code) in the last few months?

Are they counting lolicon in those numbers? 'Cause, if they aren't, then... holy shit, that's alarming.

I'll bet the rape-games are gonna get blamed for it. This is just that kinda thing Jack Thompson was waiting for.

Indeed. They make some amazing things, have excellent movies/anime/manga and then they have this to completely counter it all...

That's still an infinitessimally tiny number in a nation of 120 million people.

It might help to know what the average per capita number of cases there are around the world. Knowing that it's hit a peak within the country doesn't give me a very good sense of scale.

Yeah, I gotta say it doesnt't really seem like much when you look at it. The "up by x%" makes it seem larger than it really is.

I was going to google to try and find out child porn convictions in different countries but typing the words "Child pornography" into google (even with "numbers in x country on the end) probably won't give me very pleasant results and could get the police at my door >_>

Considering the amount of people that are in the country, that's not a huge number.

The age of consent probably doesn't help a great deal either, as well as the lolicon. It's the way the society works to be honest. I believe I saw somewhere that 2 years ago there were 2100 child porn cases in the U.S. alone.

EDIT: Actually if you think about it, perhaps the lolicon actually works for paedophiles in the sense that they have a safe place to let out their desires rather than on a string of children.

I'm sorry, but it's Japan, none of this amazes me.

"So you're saying that pubic hair is immoral and disgusting, and needs to be censored, yet owning kiddie porn is totally legal?"

Nothing wrong right there.

edit: I think that somehow, WW2 fucked up the sexuality of the Axis countries (excluding Italy).

That's proportionally more than Japan. In fact, proportionally that's about twice as much as Japan if it really was 2100 cases and my mental maths isn't failing me. Go find a source to confirm pleasssseeeee.

I'm sure they said that in the NAMBLA episode of South Park.
