Just the generic google search link as the source since every time I link to a specific article people complain about bias...so there, pick your own damn article. :p

Point is that the NY fire department is graduating a prospective fire fighter who failed to pass the strenuous physical examination that all other recruits up until now have been forced to pass. Why? Because she's a woman. Evidently the mayor's office has been putting pressure on the fire department to hire more women considering the fact that there only about 40 women on the force out of over 10K people.

That said, all the women that are on the force passed the physical exam.

This is a bad idea. This is a very, very bad idea. Aside from the obvious, she'll have a bad time in there, having basically skipped over an exam everyone else had to work fairly hard to pass. Not exactly a great way to make friends.

If she couldn't pass the physical exam for the job, she shouldn't be on the job. I'm not sure what else really has to be said.

If there ever comes a time when she had to pull someone out of a burning home but couldn't, I'm sure her high test scores will be a great comfort to the person as he/she gets roasted alive.

So I guess putting potential lives at stake for the sake of diversity is alright. That four minutes and ten seconds it took her to complete the challenge could easily cost someone's life in an emergency situation. To let her on to get more women in the force is downright moronic.

At least those people burning to death will know there's a bit more equality in the world. :D

So is she's happy that she got a special treatment cos of her gender? I wonder if her conscious be fine should she fail to recuse/ saved someone life if she was not physical fit to do so in the first place? I know I wouldn't be especially I hope full well I will put myself more at risk and endangering to eveybody else!

Its gonna bite them in the ass when this woman just shrugs and says she would have saved an old man from a fire, but he was just too heavy and she didn't want to break a sweat.

That's what a number of commentaries on the matter that I've heard have suggested...not only is there the obvious physical danger she'll be putting her team and civilians in, but there's also the very real possibility that she's going to be treated in a not-so-pleasant manner by everyone else who did work their butts off in order to pass the test.

If they have a position that is less physically demanding then this is still fine, not everyone is actually put on the "front line", you pick the most capable people.
But if they are expected to do the same job that will leave peoples lives at risk should their strength fail... holy fuck no.

And I probably don't need to point out the horrid sexism of this, she got in because of gender.

Not that I agree with this, but frankly I don't think I can handle the headache that comes with dealing with both this and the Twitter mess at the same time. I agree that this is wrong, but I can only take so much bile being thrown at feminists in a day. And I just know that that is what is going to happen here.

Per the New York Post article:

"Upon graduation, Wax would be assigned to a firehouse and tasked with the full duties of a firefighter."

So yeah, we're not talking about a desk job here, we're talking about hopping on a truck and going to emergencies.

The utter rubbish that is positive discrimination. Normally it is just generally an unfair system when everything should be based on merit, but this, this is irresponsible.

Mind you, I couldn't care less about her feelings, but it'll inevitably lead to her suing the PD FD when everyone treats her like crap. And given that she'll most likely win, that might end up doing way more damage than her inability to pass her exam.

Edit because derp.

That is itself a very good point.

Overall: there is absolutely no way this can end well.

Ugh. I'm a huge feminist, and I hate it when stuff like this happens. I think we can all agree that true equality qould be to determine the physical requirements necessary for the job, and then demanding them from everybody without ever letting gender be a part of the equation.

On a related note, can we please kill the myth that sexist hiring procedures is the sole reason there are no female firefighters? Sure, that's almost certainly part of it, but I'd say a bigger reason is that fewer women apply for that job in the first place. And if you get feweer female applicants, then fewer women than men will get hired even if the average woman is every bit as qualified as the average man. Just like the jobs of being a plumber, carpenter, mechanic or construction worker, there usually just aren't as many female aplicants as male ones.
