Of course it's a game

This has been a pet peeve of mine for awhile now, and will probably seem really stupid to anyone who's reading this, but I'm gonna say it anyways.

It's happened several times in the past, but it really started happening big time when Skyrim came out. People far and wide kept on saying that Skyrim was "more than a game it's an experience". That phrase "more than a game" just annoys the hell out of me, of course it's still a game dammit, all games are experiences. It just seems that once a game becomes just too big and/or amazing (opinions may vary) the term "game" just becomes too "low class" or "insubstantial" for some people. They refuse to accept that a "mere game" could ever rise to the level of a full-on "experience". Am i the only one who thinks that's really stupid, games can be as big, insane, and mind-blowing as they damn well want.

To me, it just points to the disrespect and under-appreciation games receive. In fact this exact same stupid trend happened to comic books. When really deep, thought provoking comic books started hitting the mainstream market(starting with Maus, if I remember correctly) then all of a sudden they stopped being comic books and starting being "graphic novels" which is the same damn thing just with more appeal to stupid people pretending to be smart.

Maybe I'm overreacting slightly, and maybe I'm a bit delirious, but I want to hear from you. Do you think it's a problem, that one day we'll stop playing games, and instead be playing "interactive experiences",or do you think I'm insane and should crawl back into my hole. Thanks in advance to any responses.

The general public will never adopt the term "interactive experiences". Given the choice between two options, people will always take the one with fewer syllables.

No further opinion on the matter. Carry on.

Well I can see it being a peeve, but 'more than just an x, it's a y' is hardly a phrase unique to video games. It also isn't inherently demeaning to the value of whatever x is.

You can apply it to anything really. It sounds like a dumb marketing line to me.

"It's not just a fruit salad, it's an EXPERIENCE."

Eh, it's annoying but it's hardly the end of the world.
