So as usual Hollywood misses the point of the source material. I'm not even sure they looked at it. I think they just watched the movie and thought they could repurpose it into a BladeRunner knock off. Its GitS in the most superficial cynical way possible. God damn it! Oh, by the way the guy you might think is the puppetmaster is actually Kuze from Stand Alone Complex season 2. What?

I was actually cautiously optimistic, but now I want this crap to crash a burn.

Yeah, the only time I would consider watching this is the reviews for it are overwhelming positive and some GiTs fans are saying it's good aswell!

Well, that looked positively lifeless and boring. Good job! And I'm not saying this as a GitS-fan, I only appreciate the original movie for how beautiful it looks.

What.

"They did not save your life. They stole it"? "How many were there before me"? "They created me, but they cannot control me"? Really? They decided to go with that angle for Ghost in the Shell?

I watched GITS.. the Original

I've seen the trailer for the new. I liked the trailer... I think it looks good. I'm also curious about the plot.

If they didn't "save her" as they said... is she an AI? or IS she human? Maybe she's an AI inserted into a human flesh blood brain. If so, what DOES that make her? And can we have that conversation while stuff is actually HAPPENING? Unlike the original?

I'll be frank, the Manga's "philosophising" seemed totally out of place compared to the rest of the manga... We have all this high technopunk/cyber action and then they (normal Batou and the Major) sit there staring at their moral and philosophic navels for five minutes with some of the most boring and out of place "What is a ghost and what is human" dialogue I've ever heard.

and I LIKED the manga.

Maybe it's time for a redesigned plot. I'm not writing this off, I don't care what the "True" GITS fans moan... I think this looks pretty damn interesting and a new take on the original. Cue me interested.

....I think it looks coo- *gets mauled by bears*

Seriously though I'm keen to go see it, at worst I'm getting a visual treat and at best I'm getting a pretty alright live action adaptation of a great manga/anime. That's a win-win for me really.

And really now, its not going to make me suddenly hate Ghost in the Shell or forever ruin it, I'm not going to give a random film that much power. So regardless if it ends up sucking or being good I'm most probably going to be rewatching the series and movies again for my enjoyment which is cool for me.

Looks alright to me.

It might even have a second act, unlike the original film.

Considering how fucking weird and bizarre the plots of the regular GitS material is, I hardly think this storyline is all that out of theme. I mean did people expect them to just make a clone of one of the manga's/movies/tv show? Where the plot is already known to everyone, and no surprises? Makes more sense for them to make a new story, and a story about a false identity when you become so manufactured is hardly out of theme for cyberpunk stories.

I might check this out at some point, not really chomping at the bit though, seeing as I was never a huge GitS fan. But then again, I find most anime to be fucking insane, and is best described as "someone trying to explain an acid trip to someone else, after having come down from it, and them transcribing the descriptions using an etcha-sketch. "

Let's be honest, did anyone actually think that this movie was going to be good?

What do you mean by good? Do you mean "Amazing movie that shakes the foundation of cinema for a generation, and becomes a pillar of the medium that is studied by movie classes for years?"

Or do you mean "It was enjoyable to watch and entertaining." ?

Because if you mean the first, then no, I don't think anyone thought that. But if you mean 2, I think it looks relatively good. I doubt I'll want to buy it on DVD, but I'll probably enjoy it while it's on the screen. I might not though, I've hated movies before, but then I've also ended up loving movies that other people found to be dull/terrible, so it's all relative.

When I say "good" I mean a good adaptation of Ghost in the Shell. Something that does the source material justice. Seriously, was anyone actually expecting it to do that?

Eh, again, considering how all over the place, and fucking insane the source material is, I don't really see how anyone can say this is definitely going to be an "injustice" to the source material. I mean come on, the source material has AI spider bots that suddenly develop individuality because a guy gives them a different kind of lubricant. It's hardly out of place to have a story about a shadow conspiracy that might have rewritten the minds of their robotic killing machines to keep them docile and compliant.

The only consistent theme I've ever seen from the various GitS sources is the discussion of what it is to be a person/human/individual, in an age where everything about your identity can be manufactured, and replaced. To have a story about a woman learning that who she thinks she is, her very core identity might be false, seems entirely in theme to the source material.

I mean fuck, the first movie that started it all had that as a subplot. The guy she fights in the ankle high water was completely rewritten, thinking he had a family and shit. So again, how is this not in theme?

I guess I just don't think any of this is going to be done very well. But, to be fair, it's not like I have a major (heh) horse in this race and I was mainly just making an idle observation.

That's fine, I just wanted to point out that just because it might not be good (which I fully admit it might suck), that doesn't mean that the theme of this film isn't true to the source material. Mainly because the source material is all over the place in the story that it likes to tell from version to version. Others might disagree and that's fine, but I don't see anything presented that doesn't fit in the GitS theme, which is basically just a cyberpunk setting. It feels, to me, that they wanted to tell an original story, and decided to use something that was a subplot from the original movie, and instead expand that out to be more of a major (I see what you did there) part of the story. The whole "is my identity real, or was it fabricated by someone"

Personally, I'm fine with that. I'm a firm believer in pretty much anything can be a good story, if it's told well. Whether or not this movie accomplishes that is a different story. I also don't have a stake in this being good/bad, for previously stated reasons, but I'm staying neutral on if it will be shit or good.

So to answer your idle conversation question "I seriously think it might be good. But I also think it might suck" xD
