They've gone with the most obvious and plated out angle possible, but I still think people who have never heard of the anime might still enjoy it.

The gender-flipped Robocop reboot is coming along nicely I see.

Looks visually interesting. Otherwise the generic action movie trailer editing shows way too much which usually isn't a sign of a good movie. Anyway, I forgot about it already. Dunno if I'm going to see it.

..but the japanese cartoon in question is itself a cyberpunk genre classic. So I'm not really sure why that distinction needs to be made? I mean, for a lot of people, Ghost in the Shell was their first exposure to cyberpunk in their younger days.

I think it looks decent. Not awesome, not "going to see it on cinema", but decent enough to watch on Netflix some time later.

Granted, I only saw the movies, but both the uncanny valley performance and the navel gazing philosophy seems quite on point with the source material. They even lifted several scenes from the OVAs straight.

I suppose I don't need to see it now, as all the plot points and twists were given away in the damn trailer!

Doesn't look particularly interesting to me. I still have yet to finish SAC, I'd rather go do that than sit in the cinema for this.

Just goes to show you. Never trust a movie with Scarlett Johansson as the lead. She's not charismatic, or talented or anything other than a pretty face and a stuffed butt.

She works as Black Widow because Black Widow isn't a character. She's a plot device to deliver intel, gadgets or get the real heroes out of sticky situations with a smirk, hip thrusting, a second smirk and a shrug.
And now finally we can get to the 3rd act climax.

Well considering the major is an emotionless robot, I think ScarJo is a pretty apt choice to portray her.

She's not a robot. The ghost in her shell is human, and the prosthetic body is quite capable of expression. She only starts acting robotic after the Pupper Master begins to infiltrate her cyberbrain.
I wasn't being literal, I know she has a human brain in there. But sorry, I disagree, I've seen the original movie and at least the Laughing Man series of GitS, and she was pretty fucking emotionless for 99% of her screen time.

Well, somebody saw The Matrix... It really came full circle, didn't it? People called out the Matrix for stealing from Ghost in the Shell, especially when it did something original (the sequels, where the creator wished the Wachowskis had stolen more of his material), now the oficial Ghost in the Shell looks like a mash-up of Blade Runner and The Matrix.

People tend to forget, but each version of the Major/GitS is different. The original manga incarnation was in her 20s and had a whole bunch of slapstick and black comedy, the two animated movies are more serious, philosophical and she was implied to be in her late 40s/early 50s, and Stand Alone Complex is a well balance between the two with the Major being in her 30s. I don't know about Arise, never watched it. That being said, Motoko didn't need another Hollywood cliche of "they stole your life" or "we can rebuild him/her". The problem is, no matter the continuity, The Major always chose to be a cyborg, not some gender flipped version of Robocop. The visuals are matched to a tee; more so of the two animated movies, but I am still willing to give it a chance. Best case scenario: it's decent film. Worse case scenario: possibly bad, but better than the live-action Dragonball or Speed Racer (at least the Wachowski's were trying).

The irony on my part is that growing up, I was not a big fan of the Ghost in the Shell in general, but I had respect for what it (the anime movies) did in moving the anime medium forward. I saw the first one back in the summer of 2002 (turning 13) and didn't like it. I did not see it again until November, 2016. While the movie still has some flaws, I have a greater appreciation now, than I did back then. Especially with most of the anime today being homogenized, generic, and uninteresting. Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence I did not see until last week, when I bought the Blu-Ray at my local best Buy. Great movie and a lot more straightforward with its plot compared to the predecessor. Due note that the recent re-release of Innocence has the superior Bandai English Dub, and not the shitty Dream Works dub. So that's a bonus for dub fans.

I feel Bennett the Sage can give more details. Due note, that there are spoilers for both movies in his videos, so you might want to watch them first before looking at his reviews.

My reaction? It was a trailer. That's all. It didn't blew me off, it didn't suck either.
Can't really tell how much of that "I've lost my original body, the existential pain" angle will be utilized in movie from it, so i'm witholding my judgment. I like the aesthetics though.

And speaking about the looks: Do these shots of the city from above really remind anyone else of AKIRA? Or maybe my memories of the original animated movie are fuzzy, and it looked somewhat closer to that there, as opposed to the city in SAC.

I got more of a Blade Runner vibe myself, but "dystopian high-tech city sprawl" is kind of ubiquitous at this point for cyberpunk. xD
