....and my warranty is up. How much cash am I going to have to hand over to MS to get this thing fixed? Are there any fixes for it that I can do at my house? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

If you've had the console for under 3 years you are fine, they'll do it for free. Call their 800 # (can't remember it off hand) and give them your information. Done deal. The total process took about a week for me (7 days).

i just sent in two consoles that had the red ring of death. They were some of the first ones to come out. MS didnt care how old they were if it was a genuine red ring error, it will be free. Any other repairs are apparently 99 bucks

If you've had the 360 for under three years and you have the rings of fire than they will repair it free of charge.

Realign the heatsinks, will take you 30 bucks and 20 minutes and you'll never get an error again.
