Oi. You metally-inclined people out there.

Metal is a genre I tend to avoid, bar the few bands that I've grown attached top [Opeth, Russian Circles and, er...Cradle of Filth]. But I've been looking for a band that has a similar, dirge-like sound to that of..say..Isis or Neurosis. Without the facepalm-inducing vocals.

You know..Something that kind of feels like being blasted with pure sound. I've found Pelican, but are there any other bands that fit the description?

Are you perhaps interested in speed/power metal?
You could go with Savage circus, Blind Guardian, Demons and Wizards or Iced Earth.
Here are a few samples:

Tool or A Perfect Circle sound like your sort of thing. Possibly Sentenced or Charon too. Youtube them and see what you think

Mastodon maybe? To be honest, it's hard to find what you're after without the growled vocals. It's an ingrained part of the genre.

'Facepalm-inducing vocals'?

A little clarification on this? If you're referring to death growls or black metal screams, they can be done badly but when they're done well they're amazing, it's just another way of singing kinda like hearing opera or something. Keep an open mind if you can, you'll be rewarded for your patience.

As for bands:
Tool
Electric Wizard
Akercocke
Demons and Wizards
Agalloch (sometimes)

Never really liked metal.

Then again I adore opera.
Nevermore's vocalist is a trained opera singer, his reach is amazing.
I like metal cause its a wide genre, If you start growling in a opera song people will frown upon you and in metal you can have both.
Not saying everyone should like it ofc, just sharing my opinion. Taste is a weird thing

What would facepalm inducing vocals be considered as?

There are soooooooo many styles of vocals for metal out there that I don't even have the enthusiasm to begin to describe them.

I'm not sure, Deathstars and Rammstein?

They're pretty awesome, but I'm not sure of genres.
Yeah, I like Rammstein because no one is screaming like they just stepped on glass and then fell off the top of a building.

Perhaps Children of Bodom, Trivium, Rammstein, or Tool?

Though, if you don't like this, I'll have to punch you:

I don't listen to much soft metal, elf-metal (NightFish) or psuedo-metal (c'mon, Tool?? A Perfect Circle??) so my suggestions will be rather limited, but whatever, try:
Forest of Shadows [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oO6Dn4kh_eo] - Fairly lightweight Doom which occasionally stretches into Stoner and Death territory.
The Vision Bleak [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_2cADn7v-M] - Lightweight Horror Metal, a bit more upbeat than most. And by Horror I don't mean Gore.
Dimmu Borgir [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMhBz4U6UDU] - Well, it's metal. Soft metal. I lump Dimmu in with bands like Rammstein: It's "pop-ular" metal. (Once upon a time it was Black.)

My own preferences are Black (mostly norsk) and Death (mostly svensk). But the aforementioned have still found their way into my collection.
