Old games that didn't age well.

I know there are a couple of games that, while not as innovate as they were in their time, are still pretty fun today and they would still please many people for years to come, classics like Castlevania: Symphony of The Night, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Half-Life 2 are timeless and they are going to be as fun and engaging as they were in their time.

BUT, there are still some games that may have been considered good, but today, they simply aren't as fun as they were. Mostly, these games are based on a cheap gimmick, or simply weren't that great on their time. Games like the first Crash Bandicoot, I know the series got better with 2 & 3, but the first game was regarded as a "Mario killer", even back in the day, I found the game very frustrating, with ugly graphics, even for PS1 standards and a crappy save system.

I can come up with more examples, but this thread isn't about me, it's about what you, my fellow Escapist, think about it.
So, wich games do you think that haven't aged that well and why?

EDIT: Oh my goodness, 1 night and the thread grew more than I originally intended.

I forgot to mention 1 key element. Old games will always look bad, I don't care how much the amount of nostalgia is, it's always going to have bad graphics, but I created this thread just to see wich games are no longer fun to play, not wich games look bad nowadays. Of course it doesn't hurt to mention how bad it looks today, but the key focus of this thread is gameplay.

Of course there are still a few exceptions that even today still hold up and look pretty good, like Zelda Wind Waker and Beyond Good and Evil.

How has deus ex not aged well?
Its still one of (if not) the best examples of the shooter with RPG elements that is becoming so common today.

Yes the graphics are pretty terrible and some of the voice acting is spotty (I SPEEL my drink) but gameplay-wise its still top notch.

Final Fantasy 7

It just looks godawful now.

The characters all look like little pinatas and like something a 3rd grader would draw in 10 minutes.

Grand Theft Auto 3. Many of the elements that made it fun have been used in every sandbox game.

To a certain extent I agree. After I made that comment I realized I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that yes the graphics look pretty terrible now (hell they looked dated within a year of the games release). However from a game play perspective I still hold it up as one of the pinnacles of the genre* and the balance and commitment to multiple paths to completion is something I haven't seen repeated in any modern game of that genre.

Also the texture pack:
http://www.offtopicproductions.com/hdtp/
I think there is another renderer for the game too that helps out but I can't find the bookmark at the moment.

EDIT: http://www.moddb.com/mods/deus-ex-new-vision Looks like a more unified project.

*Genre here referring to that combination of real time shooter with RPG elements, typically single player and heavily story based. It doesn't fell right calling it an RPG but the shooter on its own is pretty uninspired so I feel they need some classification other then RPG or shooter or at least be considered a separate sub-genre.

Yeah, I've been scavanging for old games that I haven't played for a while and even old games that I didn't played back at the time.

For example, when I played Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection in my (ex) 360 last year, there were many games that I missed back then and I found rather fun, like the Sonics and some others, but then I played Altered Beast, both in it's Genesis and Arcade versions and both suck, it even struck me as a surprise that in it's "biography" says that the game was quite popular back then. I don't know why, maybe because many people were stuck with it as it was included with the Genesis. I don't know, but that game sucks in many levels.

Half Life 1

Horribly, horribly dated now. Clunky controls, terrible platforming sections, butt ugly and frustrating trial and error gameplay.

And this is from someone who has HL2 as #3 in his all time top 5.

I must agree. The worst part is that everyone has tiny pipe-cleaner arms with balls for hands.

This is a problem that plagues a lot of PS1-era games, actually. Makes me wish they'd stuck with sprites until they could get 3D models right (though I guess there'd be no progress otherwise).

Kingdom Hearts is still fun but when you go back and play it, you realize how linear all the levels are, as well as how annoying the camera is. KHII has aged slightly better but the levels are still pretty confining.
Also Banjo Kazooie's controls can be a little clunky at times. and the levels feel extremely small.
and finally, play Bioshock, Fallout 3 or any modern shooter, then go play Goldeneye 64. it feels very awkward

Erm... I think Half-Life 2 aged horribly. I mean I enjoyed the story of the games, but I was horribly annoyed by how predictable everything was. Basic weapons with simplistic mechanics, no bonuses in the game and no exploration, horrible driving sequences, very little strategy, etc etc
It was revolutionary, but it doesn't hold up

I just thought of almost all the chinese and french accents. But still a decent game... man I wish they were going to release a HD remake, Damn you Extra Credit for the inception...

Well, im not sure about KH, but with Goldeneye, one must remember that we were playing that with a single stick on what had to be the worst designed controller in history...

I agree with you that HL1 has aged horribly compared to HL2, but by no means is a bad game, it's still quite decent, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone anymore.

The first Legend of Zelda, no offence. i know it was the start of an amazing series, but it hasn't aged well at all, the map was basic so you didn't knew which way you was going, leading to areas looking too simular to eachover and the fact that your're placed splatdown in a random spot near a cave with a guy who basically says "heres a sword, go nuts"...i just couldnt get into it, again im sorry. :/

Marvel Vs. Capcom 2.

I'm pretty sure some people still find it addicting, but even back when it first came out, I saw how horribly broken it was.

Hard to believe it precedes MvC3.

As much as it hurts e to say, The first spyro game hasnt aged well. I still remember times when I would glide and it would just stop mid gluide and I would fall to my death.

Still fun though.
