I never thought I'd find myself int his position. Making a thread like this. But here I am. Anyways, thanks to an open mind and a desire to see something new, I have started watching anime series. Thing is, I am coming into this without nostalgia goggles, and I find that the older series appeal to me more.

I've tried out Trigun (hilarious), and Cowboy Bebop (classy), as well as a few of the older Gundam series, and I find them to be more interesting than the newer shows. I do love stuff like Code Geass, but shows like that are limited I find. I dunno, the old school series just seem to rock it for me more.

Like Trigun for example. I've only watched the first few episodes, and they have me laughing at the insanity that goes on. Vash's tussle with the giant boomerang guy's gang felt like something out of looney tunes. It just felt like it had style. Also, the old school shows have awesome opening instrumentals. I can't stand the J-pop that is so prevalent in newer shows.

So this is coming from a person who hasn't had enough exposure to be considered nostalgia blinded (really, I only started a few weeks ago), but considers the older series to be superior. Does anyone else feel the same way? Can any of the anime buffs name any reasons for why I might have this disposition?

Whatever, just wash your hands.
There is alot of bad new anime but there is also allot of bad old anime, its one of those things where most of the bad old stuff is forgotten and the stuff that is remembered is the better stuff.

Well, when it comes to the older series, only the classics remain.

There was probably as much crap coming out back in the old days as there is now, but that have mostly sunk beneath the waves of oblivion, with only the best offerings like Monster, Berserk, Grave of the Fireflies, and such remaining afloat. Most of the bad stuff probably didn't even make it to the West anyway before the internet came around.

Other than that, each decade has its prevalent art styles and themes, and some are simply partial to particular ones. The old stuff probably has more hand drawn animation too, while many new series opt for the digital route.

Well, like i said, I haven't had enough exposure yet to wear the rose tinted glasses, so I can't really make an informed opinion yet.

try Martian successor NADIESCO! it was made in the (late?) 90s... has that nostalgic feel to it. also try Berserk, but do not expect a mind blowing end from it, and from retrospective, start with the second episode, watch the whole anime, and watch the first...

Outlaw Star.

Most of the series I watched when I was younger don't really hold up now.

Outlaw Star is not one those. It's a brilliant sci-fi series with interesting characters and solid overarching story, I still love watching that series and will go back to it at least once a year.

I mean come on! the intro kicks arse!

It's simple, really. The series you're checking out are the cream of that era's crop, filtered out above the hundreds of crappy series. Which is why they were notable enough for you to even know to give a go.

Like I wouldn't be surprised if in 10 years time people have similar sentiments about Mushishi, or Bunny Drop, Sket Dance and whatnot. but at the moment the current anime series are a much more mixed bag because we haven't had time to reflect and cherrypick the best.

It's not that old is better, just that hindsight is a gift.

Outlaw Star, Tenchi Muyo!, Golden Boy, Berserk, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, and the list could go on and on. Depends on how far back you go to qualify for "old school" really. I tend to like a lot of the older animes as well, but some of the more mature themed ones within the last few years seem to be good as well. And by mature, I mean targeted towards a more mature audience, and not always taking place in highschool, and not porn either.

Really depends on what you're into though.

I recommend Yu Yu Hakusho, that was a great fighting anime that had ghosts and other ethereal beings in it. Doesnt drag on like DBZ at all.

well I would guess that what you like in anime was popular in the 90s so that's when the stuff you like is from. I can't actually think of anything like trigun from the last few years.

You should try watching these old school anime-
Golden Boy
Hunter X Hunter (It's a long series like One Piece, Naruto and Bleach but unlike them it had ended well abruptly), yes there is a newer one that being aired weekly but that is the same as the old one but the quality is modern (same story).

Something about Trigun just clicks with me. Like I said, its Looney Tunes, but with guns.

That kind of humor I can get behind. High pitched squealing laughter about a sexually harassed boy in a harem series? Not so much.

Try Trinity Blood, Hellsing, or demon king daimao, which is harem but hilarious.
you could also watch Needless, but don't blame me if it causes brain hemorrhaging.

Guyver Bioboosted Armour, and no, not the shitty new Guyver series, or those crappy live action American movies, I mean the twelve episode series from 1989.

You can't get anymore awesome than that.

Genocyber is an anime movie which is in the same vein as Guyver (like Guyver only female), which is pretty good, despite being quite graphic. For example, she rips off this guy's Penis in the beginning of the movie...yeah.

Also, Cyber City Odedo 808 was pretty cool, despite being kinda cheesy. It was also featured recently in a music video for Innocence by Nero, if you are a Dubstep fan you should know that tune.

The Slayers is another old anime which is frikken awesome. It's genuinely hilarious too, which except in Excel Saga I find lacking in anime.

I prefer the older animes too. Take Sailor Moon for example, still my favourite anime of all time. I've watched many, many animes through the years and not one has come close to knocking Sailor Moon from the top to me. I also love Outlaw Star, Cowboy Bebop, Yu Yu Hakusho...and a lot of others. It's hard for me to even find a recent/new anime to get into though. Granted there has been some but not many.

Yes, I consider (most) older animes better than recent stuff. I have some theories as to why (mostly to do with the expense of importing the stuff) but I'll just get to the listing:

Slayers (including Next and Try): If you like comedy with a plot, then this is a good option.
El Hazard: Some wonderful trope-reversals in this one, also very funny

Revolutionary Girl Utena: weird, complex, and really well written. Also yuri.
Sailor Moon: funny and occasionally awesome

Neon Genesis Evangelion: good mecha series, better mind-fuckery

Serial Experiements Lain: you won't find an anime weirder, except maybe
Key the Metal Idol: will you be one of her 40,000 friends? ... that sounds less impressive since the advent of Facebook.

And finally:
The Vision of Escaflowne: beautiful, stunning, and amazing music - a true Must See.

If you like stuff like Code Geass, you should try Code Geass.

It's from around 2006-2007, so it's pretty old.
