Old Sentai costumes used in the new Power Rangers show: Your thoughts?

So, as I'm sure some of you are aware, there's a new Power Rangers show out now: Power Rangers Super Megaforce (yeah, kinda dumb title, I'll admit)

The basic gimmick this time around is that they're pirates... and they have the powers of every previous ranger team ever. Here's a good example:

Now, the observant among you who are also ranger fans may notice something... odd. Specifically, that in the first video I posted, the rangers switched into costumes that aren't from ANY season of Power Rangers. Rather, they're suits from the pre-Power Rangers Sentai series that never had english adaptations. Near as I can tell, they still haven't really addressed this in the show (I think there was a single line along the lines of "rangers never seen before on earth").

This has become something of a divisive topic among the fans. Some think it's cool, others think they should have been edited out, and others would simply like a legitimate explanation for these powers.

I fall more into the third category. I DO think it's neat that they're including this nod to the original Sentai series, but SOME kind of explanation would be nice.

I'm in the 3rd category with you. I think it's awesome. I've always been intrigued about all the other sentai series that were never done. I did a whole internet research thing briefly and discovered so many starting from at least the 50s and it's amazing. Always made me wonder what it'd be like. Especially as I like comparing.

But yeah, I'd appreciate an explanation. The line you mention was actually in a previous episode some time back where they unlocked new powers. But that was basically it. "Now you can unlock the abilities of rangers never before seen on Earth."

Might be interesting if they just made up some names for them. I mean, it can't be too hard. It's not like any of the other Power Rangers' names were all that creative anyway. SPD wasn't changed at all. Just the letters stand for something completely different. And three of them all use the word "force." Wild Force. Time Force. Mystic Force. I call shenanigans that they couldn't have used their brain to come up with something.

Did notice that the yellow Ranger said the words: "Legendary Ranger Mode-Blitz." And I wonder if that's a possible name for that Ranger type or if she was just saying she was gonna have a blitz with all kinds of rangers coming consistently and nonstop.

I don't remember which team the Yellow Ranger used when she called it 'Blitz', but I know Pink was using Flashman when she busted out the big glowing boots. I haven't been watching Super Megaforce -- did they ever give a reason for all the skulls, crossbones, cutlasses and general pirate-themed jazz? The Japanese source for the Super Megaforce footage is Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger, in which the Rangers are actually space pirates. Unlike SMF where, as far as I've been able to tell, they're pirates because...toy sales?

Haha I think I got why they are "pirates" as their initial form!

Anyway I'm ok with it (it kind of like how Iron Man changed suits althought their method of changing is alot faster!) since at least they are putting the old suit in use (recycling in a way) althought initial thought they were going to used the Sentai costume before Might Morphin (I've seen that white suit but with rainbow visor ranger but I have no idea who he is).

Are you talking about the first form the red ranger takes in the first video? Because that's actually an interesting tale.

The suit is from Dairanger, and if you watched Power Rangers back in the day, you're more familiar with it than you realize. You see, in Japan, Dairanger was the Sentai series that came out right after Zyuranger, the series that Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is based on. However, they never used those suits in the American show.

But do you remember in the second season when they changed from the classic Megazord into the new Thunder Megazord? Yup, that was actually the giant robot from Dairanger. All the monsters and giant robot fights (and even some of the new weapons) were lifted straight from Dairanger, but they made all their own fight scenes with the MMPR suits.

And as you've probably already guessed at this point, the White Ranger wasn't some seventh ranger for MMPR, he was actually the sixth ranger for Dairanger. That's why the White Ranger suit looks a bit different from the other suits. Incidentally, he was called the Kiba Ranger, and he was a little kid, not unlike how in Power Rangers Turbo, their blue ranger was actually a little kid.

You mean this guy?

He's J.A.K.Q. Dengekitai's BIG ONE! He was the first extra ranger added to a team, and took the leader position from red. He's kind of awesome.

He's from old school Sentai, back when they were all manly men, and manly women, who did manly things, rather than a bunch of kids.

OK, at the risk of being a bit dumb here, but why would they want them edited out? Seems a bit of a silly stance to take.

They never showed up in POwer Rangers before, and most fans haven't heard of Super Sentai. It would be confusing to suddenly have a team you never heard of show up.

"The Morphing Grid should be free!"

That would actually be a hilarious season.

But honestly, I just don't care that much about whether or not they're there. The idea of basically a celebration of the anniversary of Power Rangers (And Super Sentai) is awesome and I don't care if it makes a lick of sense. I mean, doesn't the original Sentai version have dead rangers returning from Heaven to fight because reasons?

It's a cool nod, whether or not it's explained. Granted, I get more excited about legendary forms based on the shows I actually enjoyed. I didn't like Samurai or Ninja Storm, for example, so I am less excited about them and I can see why Rangers fans might be even less excited about Rangers that weren't really Rangers.

Still, I respect and appreciate the source material.

Wouldn't it be "because they're beholden to the source material?"

I can't even begin to worry about this subject because the only thing I'm wondering now after 6 episodes is where the fuck is Tommy as the original green ranger?

They hyped the fuck out of him returning, we've seen pictures of him with the rest of the cast in costume, we've seen behind the scenes photos of him on set.

Like, are they seriously not doing anything with him until the finale?

All we've seen so far from these cameos is 2 out-of-costume rangers in 2 minute scenes giving the Megaforce rangers some advice.

For all the hype that's been built up about old rangers returning it has really been a disappointment so far.

Oh, THAT'S who he was talking about. I thought he was referring to someone in one of the vids I posted, but that makes alot more sense. But yeah, I wouldn't mind seeing Big One show up in some capacity in SMF. He is a pretty pimp-ass ************.

When you think about it, Big One is to Sentai what the Green Ranger/Tommy is to us. The original "extra ranger", and it's generally understood by all that he's an amazing badass, even all these years later.

While we are on this subject, may I reccommend the Gokaiger/Goseiger 199 Hero War, AKA, the most epic thing ever?

When has Power Rangers ever REALLY made sense?

'Here's a white dude and an annoying robot teaching random kids to use mecha and magical suits to battle random giant monsters n' shit'.

:/

Lets just have fun with it and hope nobody else ends up dead, in prison, or porn.

Hmm... your logic is flawless. I guess it DOESN'T really matter if they explain it or not. It won't make sense either way.

Huh. Don't they re-use a lot of action scenes from the original Sentai it's based on? I remember reading something about that somewhere. It would explain it. I guess.

They do. However, what's strange about all this is the fact that, even though they're reusing alot of Sentai footage, they're also editing in their own stuff. Hell, in the first clip I posted, when the green ranger changes to Zeo, that's clearly new footage they shot for this.

If they REALLY wanted to, they could have easily edited out any Sentai leftovers and kept it purely Power Rangers. So it was a conscious decision to keep that stuff in.

Honestly? It annoys me. This is supposed to be a show celebrating 20 years of Power Rangers. When screen time is being used on teams that haven't been part of Power Rangers, it's less time that could have been used to feature ranger powers that have been part of the series. Seasons are now only 20 episodes each now, so they don't exactly have as much time to use as they used to. Since they used them, I at least want an explanation for them. Gosei said that the Dairanger suits were powers that haven't been seen on Earth before. What does that mean? Are they from another planet? Another dimension? The future? Are they a set of powers that haven't been activated yet? Explain things. And those were just the Dairanger suits. They didn't even bother saying anything about the pre-Zyu suits used later. Hell, at least give them a name!

Agreed, they're definitely stuck working with the source material. It just seems like using Gokaiger made things a bit more complicated. 2013's Sentai series, Kyoryuger, used dinosaurs again. That'll be next year's PR series (Dino Charge). It seems far easier to explain using dinosaurs than pirates. I can't really fault them for wanting to use Gokaiger, which is a good show that boasts lots of cool footage, but it leaves some awkward hoops for the writers to jump through.

Personally, I love the way they included some of my favorite Rangers, like New Powers and Blitz.
