This topic is pretty pointless because if people dont want to use their mic then they dont have to. Obviously you take "GAMES" too seriously!!! Remember that they are in fact games and not real life. Cheer up.

I have a mic I only use it to talk to people I know because everyone else I encounter is racist, sexist, homophobic or a complete tosser. And to everyone who said you need a mic for Left 4 Dead that's not true noone uses a mic when I play it and we get through the campaigns because it's common sense run through level, help people when they need it simple

Yeh, that is why I get so cranky when people get abusive about you not using a mic.
That must be a pain in the ass to explain..."On-Topic"I rarely use a microphone, and on the rare occasion I do use one it is on a Console.

Um...Ok

I'm assuming you mean this on consoles as you can type while doing PC gaming co-op
Yeah but its still a lot easier to say down a microphone, help there is a hunter on me than typing it in on L4D.

There's no way I'm gonna plug the headset in unless I'm playing with people I know well.
This. If someone's shit at L4D then they're shit at L4D, and no amount of teamchat will improve our chances of survival.

It gets hard on some games: For example Resistance 2, the only game I regularly play on online co-op. However I always play with a friend on the same console so using a mic could be difficult. And we can commnicate with each other anyway.

EDIT: Whenever I encounter people using a mic on this game they usually use it to play music at the other players so I mute them anyway.

People take them out because of racists and sexists
Indeed, since MS doesn't really police that behavior and people a generally jerks in online communities that are ungoverned or poorly monitored, I just keep the mic out. Blame them, not the black guy that's tired of being randomly n-worded by 13 year olds.

From the sound of it I don't wan't to talk to you. Play with friends, or play with the knowledge that not everybody gives a shit.
So if you don't give a shit stick to solo and stop ruining the experience for everyone else by joining their game and going off doing your own thing.
Sounds like someones crying because they couldn't talk to someone online so they didn't do what you wanted.

You come off as a complete ass who hates not getting his own way and not being able to tell people what to do in a game. No wonder nobody talks with you.

Even on the most team oriented games like L4D you can get through with some common sense. I've seen people without mics be much more helpful than racist kids with mics.

Really, if you are going to play an online game that features co-op, could you please have a f@#king mic on and plugged in? I suppose it could be worse, but really... if you're playing online co-op.. put your mic on and act like a partner.
...what? and listen to you ranting down my earhole? No thanks!

The only time I don't use my mic is if I'm on XBL without my actual friends just to avoid getting spammed with hate crap and comments about my mother, sexual orientation and/or my accent and nationality. Any matchmaking game will wind up with you in a game with somebody who just can't even attempt to be pleasant. Any other time I'm quite happy to plug my mic in, even if I don't talk it helps to be able to hear the other people to get some idea as to what they are doing or what the plan is etc.

I avoid online matches with a lot of random people because of mics most people tend to get pissy about stupid things, or there little kids yelling into the mic and then just people being racist sexist and just plain annoying trolls. The only thing I play online with random people a lot is killing floor simply because most people in there have been reasonable.

First of all, I'm not saying I want this to get my own way or anything like that. I'm not trying to be bossy, I'm saying why participate in a co-op mode if you don't want to co-operate? That's what co-op stands for. If you just want to dick around, why does that have to be done in co-op? In a game like Diablo it made more sense... first of all because it's on PC and everyone can type, and secondly, because the game world was so large it could support people going off on their own without ruining the fun of other people.

The guy that joined MY game last night was in the exact same area as me, doing the same quests, but running around picking up everything first and generally not being very co-operative.

I think it would just be a common courtesy. That's all I'm asking. I know there's a downside to mics and I know in some cases you can get by without them, but just try to honour the intent of the game that you're playing.

I get really shitty when people rage about you not using a mic. I am mute, how will I use a fucking mic, hmm? It is the reason I do not play left 4 dead or killing floor as much as I'd like, really sohuld not let them get to me, but it does put me off playing.
That being said I tend to use common sense instead of a mic, it works fine.
Ouch. I'm not mute, but I do have that stupid deafness-related slur (and a lisp! Go me!) that means people just can't understand me over a microphone - I won't pretend to understand what it's like to not be able to talk at all, but I do sympathise.

With that in mind, people that demand mics are usually the kind of people you wouldn't want in your team anyway.

I don't use mine because I am usualy blairing iTunes and or sparing people from having to listen to my conversations with my family. And I don't want to deal with the same from the people I'm playing with.

Ok, let me clarify a few things here as to my viewpoint:

1. I only play on consoles, where typing is hard.
2. I typically only play co-operative modes online. Most deathmatch or vs modes don't appeal to me.
3. If you don't have a mic but through your actions prove that you can be a competent team mate, that's fine... it would be better if you had one, especially in games where you regularily trade items / team up against bosses, etc.
4. If you elect not to use one due to a language barrier or something just tell people, otherwise they may just think you're one of those non-mic types.

Actions speak louder than words, but words still help.

I'm pretty good at co-operating without speech, but I get it. You want the whole experience, you want to see to it that each player is able to understand each other's ideas (my brother and I prefer to play shooters with one in the fight and the other supporting with scoped rifles). Again though, most of the people I've played online with would lose their temper over silly mistakes, forget they're supposed to be having fun, and start flipping out. I don't need someone screeching (usually homosexual or racial remarks) in my ear over a missed head-shot or a lost flag. I'd rather just mic out and assume the player isn't a complete prick.

In online gaming sometimes words really do speak louder than actions, and most of the words I've gotten have been ignorant and offensive.

Depends on the game really, I mean in a shooter (L4D) I personaly couldn't type:

"watch out tank coming up behind you" (that took quite some time to type =D)

In time to stop a team mate having his face filled with zombie fist.Though perhaps in Team fortress 2 I could.

Certainly in console shooters one must have a mic.

only in games where it is absolutely necessary, because most of the time I am listening to music, and I am not going to degrade Motorhead, by having some stupid kids scream through it while I beat the shit out of them.
