So my body's reaction to the above video was to give me goosebumps, and to send a cold shiver down my spine.

Basically, Anonymous has vowed swift and terrible vengeance for the closure of Demonoid, my personal favorite torrent website. It remains to be seen if this is just posturing or a legitimate threat.

Am i the only one who thinks that there is something totally awesome about an unknown group of cyber vigilantes policing the Interwebz? A group who, despite what the media or politicians will tell you, actually have the power to do and say thing that influence millions?

I know there are those who say they are a bunch of trolls and criminals/terrorists, who's overuse of Guy Fawkes imagery has made the mask more synonymous with themselves than the movie that inspired it. That they are childish and their ideals are misguided.

But to them i say Anonymous is the hero the Internet deserves, not the one it needs.

Thoughts?

Anonymous is nothing but a group of whiny kids at their best and a group of terrorists at their worst. They do not deserve any respect or hero worship of any kind.

They are a group of people who threaten others with attacks when they do not get their way. I had the same stance with the attack on Dana White [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.340908-Dana-White-Challenges-Anon-Anon-Obliges-Releases-Danas-Social-Security-Number] and I have that same exact stance right now (see posts 10, 87, 123, 263 and 278 for my specific analysis on Anon if you are interested in what I have to say for some strange reason).

You can choose your heroes; you have the right to cheer on whoever you want. I for one will be very happy once the members of Anon who do these kinds of attacks finally get what's coming to them.

I kind of like how you phrased that.

And i certainly understand your point, if they are criminals they deserve to be punished

Criminals thrive on the indulgence of society's understanding.

Soz, Batman is just my go-to guy for all things epic.

I think what i am enamored with is the idea of Anon, that somewhere in the world there is someone (or someone's) who can say ''You know what? FUCK that''.

And then act upon it.

The Imagery/Symbolism is also quite cool :)

I can respect the "Fuck this shit" attitude to an extent. In my ever so humble opinion, if Anon kept their attacks to ONLY government targets and the attacks were peaceful (like messages through hacking), I would be on-board with what they do.

But they don't do that. They attack and disrupt the business of people who just disagree with them (see Dana White thread). Dana White had an opinion (he believed that SOPA/PIPA were good things); that's it. However, this opinion brought down Anon's hammer upon his business. If this were a one time thing, I'd let it slide as over-eager fringe parts of Anon jumping the gun. But this isn't a one time thing. We see Anon doing these types of attacks again and again on people who disagree with them. This is where I believe the key difference is between Batman and Anon; who they target and why they target them.

But again, different people believe different methods are needed. I for one believe that the method Anon uses hurts them and their message, which makes us all look bad. Some might believe that the ends justify the means, in which case I imagine they would be fine with Anon's tactics, but I don't. I believe that how your message is spread is just as important as what your message is and I disagree with Anon's "how".

EDIT: I promise, I'm getting off my soap-box now. I'll give others a chance to speak their mind :)

I can't help but feel you're a member of anon...

Just in case, THEY ARE GLORIOUS BENEVOLENT GOD LIKE ENTITIES, AND I HAVE NOTHING BUT RESPECT FOR THEM.

In truth, I don't really care to much to actually form an opinion about them, good or bad. I think the idea is cool though.

Ha, look at this guy. He thinks that certain consequences befit certain actions even though the lack of evidence to suggest the existence of anything beyond an entirely physical universe renders such impositions invalid.

It sounds like you don't really get what Anonymous is.

I like what Anon does in some cases like the birthday party for the war vet, but their threats I just find to get annoying after a certain point, especially since they seem to massively support piracy, but again, can't do anything about it so why bother discussing it.

The biggest problem with Anonymous is that there are in their very nature anonymous, as in any-one could use the name to do anything. So while there are Anonymous who could be considered 'Heros' there are those that are a trolls who love mayhem.

Anonymous is as lazy as that whole occupy nonsense. It's an excuse for people not fit for anything to feel like they're making a difference.

Meh anonymous really doesn't have the bite it used to. I mean just a few weeks ago they got their symbol and catch phrase patented/copyrighted by some small time french company and they've pretty much done jack shit about it despite cries of vengeance.

Anon is operating in one of two modes at a given time: Internet vigilante, and superdickery. One day, they can be doing great things like stopping would-be animal abusers, exposing the corruption of the Church of Scientology, stopping pedophiles, and throwing birthday parties for war veterans, the next, they can be doing a bunch of petty internet dickery like trolling browser-based casual MMOs and acting like massive dicks to a pre-teen girl. The media, however, decides to put more of an emphasis on the superdickery stuff, like the Jessi Slaughter incident.

Still, I really like the iconography, and I found a sweet bandana with a Guy Fawkes mask design printed on it that I want to get.

Well, I think we have it. It's just 4chan being...well, 4chan. Anon might be pissed but I really doubt that was their doing.

Anon are a bunch of annoying idiots who I love for some of the things they do. Not that they are the same people every time. Anyway they sometimes get stuff done which is more then I can say for most people.

1) Pretty sure the mask is still more synonymous with... Guy Fawkes than V For Vendetta, unless there are really so few people who know about their history these days.

2) I'm not sure that quote means what you think it means, at least not in the context you're using it.

Anyway, Anon has done a lot of posturing with very little real action over the last... how long has it been? And besides, I doubt they'll be able to get Demonoid back up and regardless of my thoughts on the matter, thinking that they have more resources at hand than the US Government is pretty silly.

[sub]As for my thoughts on the matter, I think it's ridiculous that the US is playing 'World Piracy Police of the Internet', but I otherwise don't care.[/sub]

Attacking people on the Internet from the safety of a home computer is not heroic. It's criminal behavior and the group should be treated as such.

I have more respect for the Whale Wars guys because atleast they are out in the real world doing something.
