Hello Escapists, I was curious if I could get some opinions on a few games that caught my eye to see if they're worth getting.

Singularity
Split/Second
Medal of Honor
Final Fantasy XIII
Enslaved: Oddessy to the West
Metro 2033

Also, a couple of questions:
I've had a questionable past with RPG's and have never really played a JRPG.
Would FFXIII be an 'ok' one to start with? Also, would I have to have played the others in the series to enjoy it?
Is Metro 2033 a survival horror game? This is important as I am a massive coward. :(

I haven't played any of these (perhaps I should), but I can state from personal experience that VVVVVV and Super Meat Boy are definitely worth your while (And they're just $5 and $15, respectively, at least on Steam).

Only one I've played is Medal of Honor. It's worth a rental at best. Single player is alright and multiplayer is functional but it won't hold your attention for more than a weak.

My opinions on those game are, in the order you listed them:

Beats me
Okay
Beats me
Beats me
Shit
Awesome.

Seriously, though: regardless of what else you get, stay away from Enslaved. Nobody deserves that.

-Singularity:I've never played it. Can't tell ya.
-Split/Second: never played it,but I saw a friend play it. Rubber band AI from Hell, and some intense game changers. Looks nice. Hard to believe Disney made it.
-Medal of Honour (assuming latest one): Never played it,but I think it's safe to assume it'll be a CoD ModWar clone. Never really liked CoD ModWar...
-Final Fantasy XIII: I think that this game, somehow, outsucks XII. The characters grated on me worse than Vaan's childishness and utterstupidity, and the story was more disjointed than VIII,if that's possible. Still liked VIII,though...Maybe it had something to do with the fact that the disjointedness MADE SENSE in that one.
-Enslaved:Oddessy of the West: Sorry, man. Never played it.
-Merto 2033: Stealth and throwing knives are your best friends. If you get into a gunfight with more than two opponents, you'd best hope you have something better than the Bastard, and they have Bastards. Great game, does the e-book it's based on more justice than any other book-game adaptation.

Metro is the only one I've played with any real amount.

It is the most atmospheric games I've ever played. It is so thick you can choke on it. Literally in-game and figuratively. It's about as survival horror as Resident Evil 4/5, however unlike those games the horror isn't about "BIG SCARY ZOMBIE RIDICULOUS THINGS", more about the creeping dread of being alone in near-lightless tunnels that may or may not be filled with mutants that want your goodies. And by goodies I mean intestines.

The ammo is kind of sparse, weapons don't do a lot of damage with the basic ammo, there's not enough money lying around, and the game has a very oppressive air to it. Despite sounding bleak, I thought it was a ton of fun. A genuinely creepy game, and a fairly interesting story to boot.

P.S., if you want to "start" in JRPG's, I recommend Persona 3 or 4 (the stories are not connected, you don't need to play the previous titles at all) on the Beginner difficulty settings. Barely any grinding required, an excellent balance for people new to the genre or people who just don't like the craziness that is Atlus' normal modes.

I've heard good things about Metro 2033 and really bad things about FF13, but that's as far as I can help you out.

Okay, so...let me put it as simply as I can. You remember Prince of Persia 2008? It's pretty much that, but with less gameplay, freedom of movement, intellectual stimulation, and plot. So it's a puzzle-platform without the puzzles and the barest semblance of platforming, which is actually more like walking while stopping to push the A button every so often.

You can probably see why that's a problem.

FF13 embodies what people hate about jrpgs and takes them to the extreme. Extreme linearity, cutscene heavy, convoluted story and very cliche characters. The battles are kinda interesting, but auto battle ruins it. Grinding is extra tedious too. Yahtzee stated that FF13 tries to involve the player as little as possible and I agree. You are basically there to push up on the joystick and press x occasionally. I wish I were exaggerating :(

It pains me to speak ill of Square, they have made many classic games in the past. But they really dropped the ball on this one. The game kinda opens up near the end, but it's too little too late. As an rpg fan I really tried to like it. But I can't reccommend it or any aspect of it to anyone.

That's the only game listed that I've played so that's all I can say.

I would recommend the Persona series for the Playstation.
more specifically persona 3, IMO. two was very hard to figure out the system for people who aren't familiar with jrps, (and for some who are, lol) and 4 was good, but 3 was better i think.
