Ever been a part of one?

I just finished my third year of Youth Orchestra here in Canada and I've really enjoyed it. I will probably try to join another orchestra later in life.

All the inter-orchestra rivalries aside,[footnote]FYI, the Brass section is still the most important part of the orchestra... [small][sub][sub]Did I just start a flamewar? Well agree with me even if you deny the truth so we can act civilly in my thread :p[/sub][/sub][/small][/footnote]we all are kind of comrades at the end of the season, right?

Feel free to post your favorite memory for the viewing pleasure of Orchestra players and viewers alike.

My favorite memory? Totally getting told to play quieter after the Viola's in front of our section complained to the conductor... We weren't even playing loud! Still makes me laugh when my fellow trumpet players and I relive the scene. Also fun was playing Mao with the brass section while waiting to perform for our final concert.

What, a list of things for you to discuss? Okay here it is.:

A)Have you ever been a part of an orchestra?

B)What side are you on instrument did you play?

and

C)What is your favorite memory?

Making music with friends is made of WIN, is it not? XD I love orchestra.

Never been a part of one.

Our school has a band class, but I never really had any desire to join it.

Orchestras are always awesome to go listen to, but other than being part of a really large high school band, never been apart of an orchestra.
As a fellow trumpet player, I can vouch that Trumpet players are arrogant, narcissistic people. I was never drawn into the instrument brawls, but our brass always thought they were the most important. Seems to be a worldwide trait.

Everyone has their own thing. I come from a musical family and have always loved music.

I'm sure you have an equivalent that I would have no interest in whatsoever and I'm just fine with that!

Viva la Freedom of choice!

[small][sub][sub]or if you are a pessimist, Viva la Illusion of Choice![/sub][/sub][/small]

Edit: I must be tired. I fixed a typo with a typo.

Band supremacy! Band supremacy!!!!
No, I like orchestras. They're quite nice. I like it when they mix songs with rock, that maneuver is becoming much more popular nowadays.

However, few horrors can match a new violin player practicing...shudder.

Hey, it's not our fault we're just better! When a single trumpet can overpower the entire woodwind section, humility is not part of the package.

Also, in my Senior year, I was the chief of Staph (yes that is spelled correctly. Don't ask) and held all the keys to the Band Room and the equipment locker, and all of my fellow Staphers were trumpet players (except for a sax player), the rest of the band was at our mercy. Its a beautiful thing, the way God intended.

Long live the brass empire! With the Trumpets leading the way, of course XD

Same logic was and still is used by our University brass (and when I was in High School, being a Trumpet player AND a Senior was like being Alpha Wolf). Though here Trumpets get along really well with the saxes, but otherwise no mercy to the woodwinds.

The saxophone is an exception here as well. They rock too much to hate. Everything else is too weak to live in the new regime us Trumpet players will create along with our brass brethren. Soon the tyranny of the strings and woodwinds will be eliminated (we'll spare the saxophones, naturally) and we will have order.

[small][sub]Why yes, my colleagues and I have discussed this multiple times throughout the years.[/sub][/small]

I come from a very musical family, yet I have absolutely no talent whatsoever. I had to play the flute for school, but I was never any good. Be proud of the talent you guys have, it's quite extraordinary :)

That being said, in my personal taste, hardcore violinists are exceptional at captivating an audience where only the most daring Trumpets go. Either way, Brass > String > Woodwind. (Saxes aside.)
Funny how the thread transformed into a Brass ego thread. xD

It started as fuel, all it needed was a spark :D

I agree, some of the hardcore violinists in my city are just jaw dropping. I could never do that to my hands. I'm something like the fifth best trumpet player in the area[footnote]being honest, being egocentric I am, of course, the best XD[/footnote] and we have a very talented Cellist as well. Classical music in this city is not dead yet.

I'm looking forward to who wins the concerto contest so I can enjoy one of our local legends tear up the stage :)

Edit: 800th post! Oh snap!

For real. There's a violinist here who plays Jimi Hendrix covers.

On Topic: Yes, I have. I got paid too. 'Twas sweet. I play sax, so I usually do more of a jazz thing, but it was pretty fun.

Also, off topic: Saxes can be WAY louder than trumpets. We're just too lazy to exert ourselves.

Nice! (I'm more of a lurker)
I was top of my class for the first few years in band, but apathy struck me and I dropped in placement. I still enjoyed learning music, and keep it close as a skill. Apparently my University is home to a rather prodigious Trumpet player (I had the honor of hearing this guy practice every Thursday during Comp. Music and English departments were in the same building.) and an almost legendary Pianist (not worldwide legend, just in the states)

a. Yes.

b. Mainly as a conductor, although I've also composed pieces, written scores and had an orchestra play it, not sure if that counts. I've also used various antique electronic instruments as part of an orchestra because I have some specialist skills in that field. Also see C.

c. I played Theremin in an orchestra once. What a prick of an instrument, easy to get a sound out of but to get a tune out of it is hard, hard work. Getting to the end of the piece we had to do was a complete bastard but the applause at the end was totally worth it.

A. Yeah I've been apart of the school one since fifth grade.

B. I played viola for the orchestra

C. Favorite memory was getting disqualified from a state competition after we had just received the top score for the day. Why you ask, because we had too many people performing in our group. Then when we went to look at the rules there wasn't a limit. Though we still did not get to move on in the competition.

The next year they put a limit on how many people can play in a group.

o-o wow. I guess something about the instruments transfers to its player. I've heard the exact same excuse from our Saxes. Seems Trumpets are egotistical and Saxes are lazy. Are the Tubas you know jolly, fun loving, and with a (sometimes twisted) sense of humor?
