So with Kingdoms of alamar and mass effect on this system i was wondering what people are thinking of it nowadays as i remember there being alot of problems with it. So now people have had some time to use it and get used to it what it the verdict?

Yet another account I'll have to keep track of...that's my view on the thing. As an idea, I suppose it's not that bad, but I don't think they'll ever be Steam. Alternatively, the market may split between the two. At any rate, I understand that the Origin is not bad by itself (heck, Steam got some bad rap in the beginning.) but it inconveniences me more than anything else.

Ive heard the spying thing before but it says that it collects anonymous non vital data so where does this paranoia come from about the spying and how far does it go with the collection of data?

A lot worse than Steam. But all I've ever used it for is to launch Battlefield 3. Even still, some days it has been unstable, crashing all the time. But it gets the job done most of the time.

When it was first switched over from EA Download manager, I had a terrible time. granted the issue I had was a culmination of things that nobody could have predicted, but it still soured my first impressions of Origin. Then we get into the issue of Origin scanning registries it has no association with, which may or may not have been fixed, depending on how much you're willing to believe a random poster on the Origin forums. Then toss in EA's spat with Valve over Steam, and the fact they are trying to hold their titles hostage by only offering them on -their- distribution service. Which, you know, I could probably understand if it wasn't such a blatantly stupid move made for seemingly petty reasons.

Now, unfortunately, as I've seen that EA is sort of trying to at least make their product workable, and I've got enough goodwill built up from decades of excellent gaming to forgive them a lot of shortcomings, I have to admit I grudgingly use Origin, sometimes, when I have no other choice.

It's not that it's a necessarily -bad- program. It's simply just not good. Now I know comparing it to Steam is unfair, Steam has had a horse in this race a lot longer and has had time to iron out their issues, but I can't help it, every time I log into Origin (I refuse to leave running in background until I have some reliable data on the whole spyware debacle) I can't help thinking "you know, this would be nice if it had X feature, like Steam does, or if I could do Y, like I can on Steam."

And after writing it all out like that, I've just realized I've become -That Guy- that anyone who's worked in Fast Food knows... The one who whines and moans all the time that the service is slow, or the coffee is stale, or the food didn't come fast enough, or it came too fast. And yet, returns everyday at the same time.

So yeah, Origin has turned me into a grouchy old hypocrit, I wonder if I can use that in a smear campaign?

It's perfectly tolerable now if you tolerate Steam. The whole "spying on me" issue was dealt with a long time ago but people still like to spew it around and remain ignorant to the fact it was changed to a level of intrusion that's equal with Steam quite a while ago. If you're OK using Steam there isn't any real glaring gripe you could have with Origin save for personal preference or technical errors now and again that I get with Steam occasionally already.

It all comes from how it used to collect personally identifiable data but they changed that as soon as everyone kicked off about it.

I have as many problems with origin as I have with Steam. I just live with both.
The only difference I have found is I get better customer service with EA than I do with Valve.

The problems against Origin are hyped up to exhaustion. Get over it.

This. I realize it's not actually identical to Steam, but from a day to day operations standpoint it is no more intrusive than Steam. I'd highly recommend it because in rare cases you'll actually get some great deals there as well.

This is the part where most people have a problem:

2. Consent to Collection and Use of Data.
You agree that EA may collect, use, store and transmit technical and
related information that identifies your computer (including the Internet Protocol
37683v1
Address), operating system, Application usage (including but not limited to
successful installation and/or removal), software, software usage and peripheral
hardware, that may be gathered periodically to facilitate the provision of software
updates, dynamically served content, product support and other services to you,
including online services. EA may also use this information combined with
personal information for marketing purposes and to improve our products and
services. We may also share that data with our third party service providers in a
form that does not personally identify you. IF YOU DO NOT WANT EA TO
COLLECT, USE, STORE, TRANSMIT OR DISPLAY THE DATA DESCRIBED IN
THIS SECTION, PLEASE DO NOT INSTALL OR USE THE APPLICATION.
This and all other data provided to EA and/or collected by EA in connection with
your installation and use of this Application is collected, used, stored and
transmitted in accordance with EA?s Privacy Policy located at www.ea.com. To
the extent that anything in this section conflicts with the terms of EA?s Privacy
Policy, the terms of the Privacy Policy shall control.

It's a standard data collection clause that the majority of online things carry. It used to be much, much worse, such as the part that stated that it rooted around your hard drive looking for pirated material. It's much tamer and user friendly than it was at first.

However, I still don't trust EA. They've shown that they're not averse to locking you out of your account, and therefor your games, for petty reasons. I refuse to give them any control over something I've payed money for.

i doubt they will be able to lock me out considering i dont use their forums/ online games. It looks like they have gotten rid of the non sueing clause then

As for offline gaming, I (re-)downloaded Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age 2 through Origin. Neither game requires Origin to run before starting.
That may have changed with games released after the introduction of Origin, though.

I turn it on when I need to run a game, I turn it off when I'm done playing a game. I've used it for 2-3 months or so now, and have had no problems with it at all. It won't replace Steam for me seeing as I'm already set-up with my community, but I don't mind it being on my computer.
