Everyone keeps talking about how stale and stagnant the industry is and how they want new things but I rarely here anyone mentioning anything about the upcoming Ouya. I know I am getting more and more excited for the Ouya with every announcement I hear about the new consoles. I guess I just find it odd everyone is shouting for change but nobody seems to be excited for the one thing that is rocking the boat.

I want to see some solid games for the system first. So far just having android games on the TV isn't very appealing to me.

I imagine they'll be the games you play on a Tegra 3 tablet or smart phone. You can even hook some of these things to TV sets and see what they'll look like.

ITMT, some youtube:
Why this and the Gamestick and Project Shield may win next generation: These are games you'll be downloading to your phone for a few bucks for the heck of it, realize they're quite good and can be played on your TV for little extra cost.

I'm expecting to spend about $800 on the PS4. The Gamestick is going to cost about $80.

what games can you play on it?

because I'm sure plently of people care more about the "core" games than whats availible on mobile systms

THAT SAID however it is a new generation

I havnt really been keeping up with it but my opinion hasnt really changed about it. Im still waiting to see a substantial games list and Im also hoping that its a success. At the very least the Ouya is going to get more competition into the market and thats only going to make things better for the consumer

That said, what kind of news has come out for it?

I just don't see myself ever picking one up. I mean great for those who want it. If I want Tablet games, I have a Droid that I got a year or so back. If I want PC like ports I have a moderate PC rig for that. For new upcoming titles to where I'm not required to restructure my PC from scratch just to "keep up" I'll get the PS4. And before you give me that "PC is cheaper and supirior" crap, PS4 will offer enough exclusive titles along the way that I'm sure I'll want to pick up, so I'll be investing in one regardless. Besides my Motherboard is actually quite dated, it couldn't support many of the new graphics cards anyway or the better CPUs, so I'd have to throw the out the baby with the bath water on this.

What games will it have on it that I can't play on my PC?

For me, that's the most important question about any console. This Ouya thing hasn't answered it yet.

I think the Ouya is really interesting, though like others I'd need a pretty compelling game list before I bought it. Whether it's merited or not, I don't have a high opinion of the kind of independent games one might find on an android device's marketplace (and I don't think a lot of console players do either). Also the size really bothers me, as does the 8GB hard drive space and no apparent physical games (which I'm really, really fond of).

I'm excited about an indie or new console breaking into the market. I actually really wish a new contender would jump in that isn't just a digital service box, if only to bring in something interesting and new.

Well until they show their game lineup there is really no more to say then wait and see.
But youtube vids do suggest that there are emulators and some ports possible already so that at least gives some value on the user input content.

Aside from a few companies declaring they were interested in developing this or that for the system, I've yet to see any actual games that are going to be on the system. So, I can't say I'm interested at this point.

The thing about the Ouya is that from what I have seen it doesn't really do anything that I am all that interested in. I haven't been paying close attention though so there might be something I am interested, but I'll be waiting for a confirmation before I make an investment.

It's good to see them try though.

Sorry what was the point of this console again?

Oh yeah it was hoping that a raft of developers who spend most of their time creating five or ten minute mobile phone games would suddenly see that Android could be used to make console quality games that would rival the stuff appearing on PS3 and 360 (or should that now technically be PS4 and XBox?) but what actually happened is Squaresoft announced they would support it by re releasing an old Final Fantasy game (wow must buy stuff)

You want to worry about what kind of games you will get on this thing?

Okay here's the developer specific blog from December

http://www.ouya.tv/category/devs/page/3/

First entry says dev systems away by end of November then nothing until January

http://www.ouya.tv/category/devs/page/2/

with the next entry being about some competition and let me quote this here

The Kind of Games We Want on OUYA
These are the results of the competition for 'The Kind of Games We Want on Ouya'

http://killscreendaily.com/create/entries.php

I was playing games like these on my Spectrum over 20 years ago okay not as many colours, not quite as good looking but I certainly wouldn't want to be playing these kind of games on my 40inch HD TV now in the fucking 21st century, I certainly wouldn't be playing these instead of whatever is coming to the next gen consoles or my current PC.

The hype was meant to be that this console would open up a whole new world of console quality Android based games and what that Create competition showed was actually embarrassing. The great thing about these kinds of games, the spectrum era games as I am going to call them, was that there was no alternative so you made the good games as fun as you could, but you had to wade through a huge amount of crap to get there and really THIS is what the Ouya is going to be about. Wading through endless crap games to find that one game that is half way fun and then knowing that their is a better developed, better looking, better supported alternative there in the existing console market.

Oh and no developer news at all on anything since the developer consoles went out, that is worrying.

Far as I've seen Ouya is basically going to be whatever I could put on an Android phone, but on my TV.

To be honest, I think I'd just stick with the phone instead of spending $100 on a box (with a gross controller) that does the same thing.

I still haven't heard a single convincing reason to get one. If I want mobile games I'll get them on my phone. If I want smaller indie games I'll go on Steam. I don't want to spend $100 on more hardware when there are already perfectly functional things that do the same and (much) more.

It potentially could open console development to a variety of indie groups who didn't have the means to get in on it before. That's good. The vast majority of indie developers are groups of people who have no idea what they are doing and will release crap if anything comes of there group, that's bad. The handful (relatively speaking when comparing percentages here) of good games that will come of this is exciting. That's good. Jackasses with their heads up their asses think this is going to create some sort of mythic innovation. Not real innovation but this fetishist nonsense that is more empty words then real concept. That's bad. Some of these "angry young men" are going to try and make games and see how difficult it really is and stop bitching. That's good. Some are going to keep bitching anyways. That's bad. More and more groups and companies are support the project with various different offers That's good and bad. It makes the system more viable but it makes maintaining an open system more difficult.

As you can see, I don'[t see this as all roses and sunshine so I'm waiting to see what happens. This has the potential to be really really cool or to crash and burn in a spectacular Jaguar-CD level failure.

There aren't any android games I'm interested in yet, so the Ouya really holds no appeal for me. It would be awesome if it was popular enough to push a new wave of game development less focused on top-notch graphics and more focused on gameplay.. .but I'm not holding my breath on that one.
