So DIIIs out, and it seems that it hasn't really lived up to the hype. (I haven't played it, more of a console gamer than PC)

What games have a big mainstream or cult following that you don't get? I'll start, Monkey Island games. Tried a bit, really just couldn't get the enthusiasm to carry on playing, ended up stopping not too far in.

inb4 COD.

I'll second that Monkey Island. I thought the humour was stupid, and I don't mind P+Cs, but I got bored pretty quick. But from all I've heard, the humor is amazing, and that's all I've heard to be honest. Is it just the humor that carries it?
I also don't really get any of the 'classic' Halo's. I hate the multiplayers, and that's a big no-no if I'm gonna play a game like that. Now Reach, on the other hand, *swoon*.
(Oh and by the way, D3 is an excellent game imo, and I think it did live up to the hype :p)

Meh, Half Life is just ok to me. Don't get me wrong I'll give the third one a try (if it ever comes out) but the other ones have underwhelmed me.

First game that comes to mind is Dead Island with that gorgeous trailer and all...

This. When I was playing Half-Life 2 I couldn't stop thinking about how many bases of things people usually hate about FPS that it covers. Dull, brown environments; mute, power-armoured protagonist; linear gameplay; awkward vehicle sections; uniform grunts as enemies.

and yet for some reason people can't get enough of it? Oh well.

What strikes me as weird is the people have a tendency to say that it's so much better than Halo. I went back and played Halo CE (which was also a bit underwhelming) and realized that they're actually pretty similar. I guess people get REALLY hung up on the whole regenerating health vs no regenerating health and an arsenal of weapons vs only two weapons department because that's the only way that they're really different apart from a couple of minor things

Most final fantasy games for me, I played ffta on the gameboy advance and liked that but I have never got on with any of the others.

Talking about trailers the brink trailers looked amazing and like it would be an FPS that was actually different but it wasn't tbh, although I do like the game.

When it comes to pre-release hype, I don't think you can get much more overhyped than Duke Nukem Forever. I still liked the game alright, and it really isn't nearly as bad as some would like you to think, but there was no way it could live up to people's expectations.

As for big followings, probably World of Warcraft. To me it just seems like an endless grind. I don't mind grind that much in some games, but WoW looks completely uninteresting and it has a monthly fee too. I really don't get it.

I've tried some free to play MMOs and they kept me entertained for a while, but that's it.

You're forgetting that CE didn't even have regen health, in fact, the majority of Halo games don't (CE no; 2 yes; 3 yes; ODST no; Wars no, Reach no, Anniversary no). So that really just leaves weapon limits.

Also Halo: CE was in space, and space makes everything better (that's just me though).

Same here. It's definitely a competently made game for its time, but there's not a whole lot that stands out for me in there compared to other FPS games (well, besides physics puzzles, but I don't even like those). Heck, even the plot isn't that interesting; I never felt attached to any of the characters or the world they were trying to save.

Also, I'd say "scrounge for ammo and healthpacks" combat is my least favorite kind of combat in a shooter, far behind tactical combat and even arcade combat.

Rage had me very excited, but turned out to be a pile of poop.
It looked pretty and the combat worked well for it, but that's about it. There was about 5 hours of main quest, I didn't like the driving combat, the story was predictable and boring, there were about three different enemies in total, just a big disappointment.

Well there is the obligatory CoD Modern Warfare ( pick a number)

But in addition to that probably for me the biggest let down was WoW looked forward to it in development, found out it would require a sub and then had to wait until I had a job to play it, finally in 2008 I finally got it and started playing, and you know what? Meh, it was okay..... It got better when I joined a guild, but overall? Meh...

The Old Republic

It's not a bad game, but prior to release Bioware hyped it up to unbelievable levels that no game could hope to live up to, all the while sneering at other MMOs they considered inferior (i.e. all of them.) A lot of the criticism that has been aimed at the game since would have been averted if they didn't claim it was "one of the greatest achievements in the history of video games."

As to games with inexplicably big followings - yeah, I'm going to go with HL2. It's strange how CoD gets criticised for overly linear singleplayer campaigns with too many scripted set pieces when HL2 does the same. City 17 feels like an obstacle course rather than an actual place - it's all just a bit too conveniently laid out to be credible.

Overhyped and overrated is not the same thing, so calling Monkey Island overhype makes no sense. Overhyped: Gears Of War 1 Overrated: GTAIV

Never played it so I can't say, but when you judge a game, you have to remember to judge it based on its contemporaries, going back and playing it today, with the lack of nostalgia and a comparison to modern games is not a fair judgement.

Just keep that in mind.

Halo CE doesn't have regenerating health. The simple fact why people love half life so much is that it has never the been the most popular shooter out there. It used to be halo so people hate halo, it is now COD so people hate COD (although I must say some people do have legitimate points against this series).
