"Overrated" = "Sucks"?

God forbid you even say it on a forum or in a reply to a video or even in real life conversation.

"Hey, what to you think of [insert popular game here in this hack conversation type]?"
"I find it overrated."
"What the fuck is your problem? It's the greatest game ever! Take your [competing console] and fuck yourself."

o·ver·rate (vr-rt)
To overestimate the merits of; rate too highly.

Now nothing in that definition says "it sucks", that's just people taking a definition too liberally. I know it's quite futile to ask such as question but are you that stupid that when you hear overrated in the same sentence as something you like you automatically assume that they say it sucks?

Please give a real response. None of this fake, "oh, I'm on a higher brain frequency that all of you even though I post on a forum and I don't do ANY of that". And don't even be the funny, clever guy that posts it anyway. You're not funny!

Well when something is overrated, it tends to suck, leading to the overrate. There are some games, though, that don't suck, but just aren't the second coming that people make them out to be.

Like Final Fantasy VII

I believe halo is Overrated and sucks fat d***.

The half-life series on the other hand is overrated, and I wouldn't say it sucks, it is just average.

But well that's just me.

I agree that most people don't understand what overrated means (that doesn't mean you should throw a temper tantrum about it, though). I, for example, think the Beatles are extremely overrated. That said, I'd still say they're one of the greatest and most influential bands of all time.

That problem arises from the fact that many people who talk about things being overrated do use the word to imply that it sucks. So you can't really get around it.

EDIT: 1337th post, woo!

The general rule is, that when a game is really popular, you will always get some people who claim that the game is "overrated" and therefore, sucks. Doesn't matter whether the game is good or not (I'm waiting for people to start saying Red Dead Redemption is overrated). God forbid a popular game is actually good, and popular for a reason.

The idea that a popular game is actually good overall, however doesn't meet their own personal preferences, never crosses their minds.

Now before people start commenting on this, I'm not referring to any one game, just games in general.

Overrated only sucks when it cannot live to the hype and expectations.
Most of the time, it's about trying to please everybody.

Agreed, most of the time when I think something is over rated, it's because I also think it sucks ass.

This. Overrated doesn't mean it sucks, just means people think far more highly of it than it's worth.

Personally I don't think Halo sucks, so I disagree there, but the fanbase is so obnoxious that it makes me dislike the game more than I would were it just like any other FPS. It's not a particularly good game, but it's not terrible. I hate playing it, however, cause the fans are annoying as hell.

FF7 is a perfect example of a game being over-rated. The main thing here is that most FF7 fans had never really played an RPG before FF7, they're children of the post-SNES age of gaming. Most people who grew up on the NES or SNES (at least most that I've talked to) prefer either FF6 or FF4 over 7, but 7 gets the most attention. Personally I don7t even think FF7 was the best RPG on the console (perhaps Xenogears, perhaps Legend of Dragoon, perhaps FFtactics, that'd be a tough call).

But I digress. People like to get offended over stupid crap so they can argue about opinion based things where no one can possibly be right or wrong.

It is my opinion that the OP should take a breather and consider the fact that while there are certain dictionary definitions of words, the language we speak is constantly shifting due to the fact that we speak it. Thus, in the overall usage of the word "overrated," a connotation of derision is most often associated.

Something can be REALLY hyped, like Avatar, and still be good, just not as good as you were hoping. In that sense, yes it is overrated.

I remember back in primary school, I said Halo: Combat Evolved was overrated and a random stranger walking past punched me. Hard. Nasty.

Overrated in my terms mostly is just not meeting my expectations, or I find it too bland and dull to not hold my intrest for more than a few hours. Fine examples are Halo, Gears of War, GTAIV, Call of Duty MW2, Fable and Section 8. While I will never say these games are in any respects BAD, they just can't hold my interest and I wonder why they are as popular as they seem to be.

This man knows good RPGs! Xenogears and Legend of Dragoon were the shit.

thank you, and yes they were. I'm currently playing through Xenogears again on my PSP. For awhile I thought I'd grown out of jRPGs, but no, it's just that most recent jRPGs can't hold a flame to how good they used to be. Xenogears is just great fun, and the story is interesting and actually motivates you to play it more. I miss that

You sir a master of words. (I will now say stink when ever I use that line, thanks!)

People like me (and many others I am sure) need to step back, take a chill pill, and just be happy with the things we like, and not try to force opinions down onto others.

It does validate some amount of credit to be issued tho, when games like Halo, Modern Warfare, and Oblivion get such high praise by so many, it is for a reason right? It doesn't make them a better game, nor does it prove others wrong with different opinions.... but like I said: I had fallen into such fanboy traps before, but hindsight is always 20/20.
can't take credit, that's just the version that I've heard ;) It's better, though, imo

You know what they say about assumptions, right?
I like FFVII and the first FF I played was FF1 on the NES. What does that mean?
I like it better than FFVI as it provided more options for character customization (Materia System IMO is still one of the series' best).

OP: Overrated is an opinion. I've used it myself.

In my opinion DA:O is completely overrated, for example. It's a boring LOTR clone with subpar clusterfuck gameplay, awful characters, uninspiring graphics and an overdone relationship system (feeding gifts = stale). But that is of course, opinion.

An assumption would be like the one made above about people who enjoy FFVII.
If I was to say: DA:O's audience only likes that game because they like to play the same WRPG over and over and over again and are afraid of anything remotely innovative. (Not my true feelings BTW, so no flaming)
I did say "most" ;) There are of course exceptions to every rule. But yes, I did make an assumption, or rather an over-generalization. I loved FF7 when it first came out, but on replaying both it and 6 I like 6 much better.

Personally I like DAO cause it harkens back to the Baldur's Gate series, which I also loved. It's definitely not the most innovative game out there, and I've never heard it described as such, but it's still fun. Hell, New Super Mario Bros Wii was a highly successful video game, and yet was about as innovative as a rock (albeit a shiny one).
