Couldn't see any threads on this and since I saw it over the weekend, I was just curious to see what others thought.
Now I really liked the first 3 with probably the 3rd being the scariest but at the same time also making arguably the least sense. One was new and novel with the scares being quite grounded in favour of logical behaviour with 2 fitting somewhere nice in the middle.
4 on the other hand...good god! What happend? Did they hire a completely different creative team for this one? This is not the same paranormal activity that has come before.
Whats been surgically removed?
-Believable and relatable characters
-Logical behaviour of protagonists and antagonists alike
-Suspense
-The restraint of jump scares to the endings or at least having a decent sense of buildup to them
Whats been inserted in place of the above?
-Blatant and clumsy call outs to classic horror movies (that creepy kids trike)
-Perhaps the dumbest and most neglectful parents ever put to film
-Jump scares that even Jason Vorhees would look down upon (a cat? Really??)
-Product Placement!!! If theres one thing which I never thought would be a problem in this series it would be that but goddamn if this movie isn't obscene in this regard.
Every phone/laptop has its Apple logo front and center, the boyfriend moves a pepsi can across the screen in one particularly egregious example and perhaps the worst offender..Kinect.
Not content with polluting the world of videogames, that bloody thing now feels the need to come into my saturday night movie as well. Yes the kinect manages to take the place of the pool cleaner thing from the second movie in that it is now front and center throughout the film and frequently has characters spout lines such as (did you now the kinect can do this..). Pretty sure thats a direct quote.
Theres loads more I could go on about but would like to know if anyone else around here has seen and hear your opinion.
