Once more the game creators have decided that thoose of us playing to not have enough Rythem in our lives . To this end there are such games as P rapper and DDR.
Patapon is along these lines but with a new twist .RPG elements.
The story is some what simple build an army and travel to the promised land to see IT. what IT is would a be a spoiler so forget finding out here.
The game play is just as simple . the 4 psp buttons are set up with drum beats put in a combo of beats such as Square square square X and they march forward . other combos for attack defend and run like your on fire also exist but have to be learned by completeing certain areas. building the beats up unleashes a combo that allows certain spells to be used and gives the patapons more damage.
Now the rpg elements.
You are set as the god for a race of black and white spikey eyeballs . you have horse rideing eyeballs , arrow fireing eyeballs spear chucking eyeballs and the more common sword and shield eyeballs . destroying enemys unlocks items that can be used to create stronger difrent colored or spiker eyeballs for all the groups . better armor weapons and horses can also be found to increase the damage and health of the little eyes. You can attack enemies or go hunting for supplies to make better troops or find better gear. Large creatures can be fought to unlock difrent beats or special items .
Now for the bad stuff.
Once you make an eyeball it has to die in such a way as its little hat cannot be recovered inorder to upgrade the type of eyeball you have . You cannot unmake weaker troops or upgrade them aside from with gear.
You are only allowed 3 groups of troops . so if you have warrior, archer and spear you have to drop one to add horse eyes.
Item drops to upgrade the creatures are rather rare unless you fight the enemy red eyeballs and even then its only mabye one or two . Plus the items fade over time and that time is useual the exact amount you need to kill them enemies that poped up between you and the droped item.
There is no learning curve if you cant keep a beat your toast. This is expecialy true as the chanting of the little eyes as they march does not always match what is needed to be input thus throwing you for a loop and looseing the action and or combo you have built up. This is paticularly true when trying to invoke a "miricale " to complete some objective or another that cannotbe passed with out this weird combo drumming .
if you can't hear the beats with the PSP speaker or headphones you wont do very well. The flashing border to supposedly keep you in time with the music is not a good indicator for when to button mash.
Your thumbs will be sore.
Good Points.
It is rather addictive and long after you put the game down you might find yourself humming out the beats or walking in time to them.
Theres a actualy sense of doing something once you defeat a large monster or come back from a hunt .
Theres quite a few mini games mixed in which allow all but free gear to be aquired for makeing more Patapons.
The story is odd but rather entertaining . As are alot of the comments made by the little eyeballs which range from compliments for well done drumming to outright insults when you screw up .
Theres a danceing tree.
Your thumbs will be sore.
All in all if you find the game for under 10 bucks its worth a buy . Its a great little time waster for long trips or work so long as you can stand lot of repetitive drum beats . renting it might be more your speed if you dont know about your like or dislike for music based games . But if your liked Pa Rapper and its ilk this might be a nice addtion for you .
