PC trouble - FF7 refuses to play...

I've been searching all over the internet to try fixing this...none of the fixes I've found have changed the result.

I had restarted FF7 on my friend's PS3, but the graphics just about killed me, so I up and got my PC version out again, remembering the graphic-tweaking mods. After installing the game, though, the game refuses to play. The screen goes black and the resolution changes to match the game's setting, but it just exits itself within seconds. I've tried changing the settings in 'ffconfig.exe,' as well as running it in each compatability mode and every combination of the two, but nothing so much as changes the problem, let alone solve it.

I'm running Vista on an Acer Extensa 5420 (which I understand to be a recipe for disaster), but I'm pretty sure that it's not the computer itself that's the problem, for once.

Can anybody here help me out?

Parts that suck have been boldened for reference.

Seriously, as much as I hate Acers, that should be the problem.
It's Vista. The PC guys can say what they like, but I've have had big problems playing some older games, not all, on Vista. FF7 is a pretty old game, and it doesn't surprise me it doesn't work on Vista.

I think you're screwed, but some others around here might have a work-around.
Good luck!

Did you try the "Chocobo Patch"? I have to use it whenever I install it - it originally fixed some bug to do with the Chocobo Races, but it also had other beneficial side-effects.

I recommend visiting qhimm.com, which hosts pretty much all of the patches and the mods.

To answer your question, no their is no FF7 for the PS3, although the PS3 can play PSX games. Now let me get on topic here. The PC version of Final Fantasy 7 has always been full of glitchs. Some of the newer computers can't even run it now. I remember when I updated my computer to a new chip it stopped playing my copy, and I didn't understand why, I searched the internet trying to find a solution, with no luck. But their is another legal alternative to play it. As long as you own th PC version of the game, you can download the PSX version of the game over the internet. You can then play the downloaded game on a PSX emulator on your computer, the emulator tricks the file into thinking that you are playing it on a PSX, while you are really playing it on the PC. I will post a line below to a good PSX emulator that offers joypad support. If you need any help finding FF7 on the internet, please send me a message and I will look for it. I hope that helps.

Nope, it's just his computer. I have the PC game, and it frequently refused to run in XP.

Here's a tip. If the game manages to install itself, right click on the icon, and hit "Ptoperties." Go to compatibility, tell it to run in XP service pack 2 mode, and give it administrators privileges. This should help, but PC FF7 was difficult to run, period.

This is the PS1 version. All PS3s have a built-in PS1 emulator. Some also have PS2 hardware/emulators built-in, but that varies from version to version.

Tried compatability mode (all options). The checkbox for admin is greyed out, possibly because mine is the only profile on the comp.

EDIT: I see the first one got answered while I was answering my phone. Oops. And how I wish it were rereleased. Then graphics would no longer be an issue.

How witty and helpful! That should solve his problem.

OT: Probably Vista, it has problems with older programs.

I tried this and it said it was...not un-patched? I really can't remember having gotten this patch before...I have, however, already applied two other patches. One is an official bug fix, and the other is a graphics mod. I'm going to re-install it, then try this again without the graphics deal.

Considering how old the game is, it's hardly surprising that it won't run on Vista.

But hey, not being able to play FFVII's no great loss, anyway.

You're right, that wasn't helpful, let me rectify this. Have you considered Dual Booting your system. This will provide both a backup to your OS and a access to your hard drive, as well as giving you more game compatibility.

Lets just say that FF7 wasn't exactly the best Console to PC port ever made.

There's so many compatibility issues and other products of poor programming in play that it's amazing that there's still a mod community around.

To answer your question; FF7 does not like Vista. At all. Hell, you need several patches just to get it to run good on XP. I think I've heard of a Vista fix. But I don't remember where.

That's not legal.

Downloading games is completely illegal, even if you own the game. When it's legal to have a backup copy, the law states a copy of the game you own. A download would give you a different copy of the game. Yes, there is a difference, especially when you have the PC version and you download the PS version.

If he has the PS version of the game, creating a disc image is legal, and playing on an emulator would be legal if he made a bios dump of his own Playstation.

I have both versions, but doing the above is too much trouble...I think.

Problem with that is that he is running it on a VISTA so therefore RUNNING IT ON XP SERVICE PACK 2 MODE WON'T WORK LEARN HOW TO READ!

You say potato I say potato. Is it legal to release a glitch computer game that doesn't run right? Yes, but it shouldn't be. He already bought a copy of the game, its not his fault if it doesn't run. Its not like he's downloading it without buying the game, and bios can be dumped legally, it doesn't even have to be from your own PSX. Just download the emulator and play. It's that simple. Unless he wants to shovel out a hundred bucks for a game he already has just to be able to play it correctly.

Yes, he owns the game, but downloading a game is still illegal even if you've bought it. You're getting a copy of the game that isn't your copy of the game.
A BIOS dump is legal as long as you own the playstation. This is because of the copyright SONY has on the BIOS. You're allowed to do whatever you want with the BIOS you bought but downloading a new BIOS is illegal.(it's illegal to distribute, and therefor illegal to own such a copy)

That was only if you want to follow IP law, I'd say you get a modular emulator(to improve graphics), get a bios, rip your own CDs(better quality) and play the game on your PC. Just remember that the only way to play without graphical glitches it to use an CRT monitor [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cathode_ray_tube] this is because of the way playstation games are programmed.
