People are wrong on the internet! What gets your goat?

So lately I find myself spending inordinate amounts of time online correcting people on various things, usually things that are completely inconsequential. I can't help myself, I'm an addict.

So what gets your goat? Are there any topics that draw this response from you? What are they?

For me, my three big ones are;

- Evolution; I'm no biologist, but the basic facts aren't that hard. Still, I see people getting them wrong all the time.
- Physics; Now, I am a student of Physics, and there are so many misconceptions about Physics that sometimes I wonder how we've made it this far as a species.
- Swordplay; this one doesn't come up quite as often, but I've learnt(/am in the process of learning) various historical European sword fighting styles and the knowledge is less accessible than the other two. This one somehow gets me the worst (I've been known to write 1600 word responses on this topic), despite the fact that it matters the least.

I dislike the fact that people argue, instead of discuss. No one is going to change their minds based on something they read on the internet (unless they do, I'm not a fucking scientist). So discuss! Build understanding! It's not that hard. Unless it is for some people?

Apparently there are one or two people who refute the fact that The Scorpion King 3 is the best movie ever.

Those people frustrate me with their opinions, because they are factually incorrect.

I mean, come on! =D

Been awhile since I've corrected someone properly on the internet. I think everyone goes through that phase before we become so jaded to the swarms of ignorant statements made in Facebook/Youtube comments that we just stop caring. At least I did.

They so do not, everyone discusses, no one argues... YOU'RE WRONG!

I think part of the problem with this very thing is the information overload we get and the echo chambers (on both sides of the political isle) that just reinforce one side.

People who micro argue.

As in, not just arguing a certain point, but will cut an entire post into 50 different replies. It gets annoying.

People who take my opinion and assume I mean it as fact.
Especially when it's about the events of a certain anime that is left very open for multiple different points of view.

Well if someone sais something bad about something I like :)
Not really but people who say something, which is proven wrong, you give them the facts and they start bashing me for being like a spawn of satan or something o_O
I mean WTF!!!

You mean like discussion about what's going to happen next episode or parts in the anime never really answered?
What are your thoughts on people comparing animes like Bleach and Naruto and fighting on about which character is stronger than the other? (<-- youtube comments) Asking you this because you seem like a person that might be the one who has the same view on this as me :)

1) Parts in the anime that are never really left answered. I was talking about Kaworu's motivations in EoE in regards to Shinji, because thats what I have a lot of arguments heated debates about.

2) I think it's all well and good for some harmless fun, but when people have serious debates about who's stronger that's when you have to push in and say that they're from two completely different universes, and are thus completely incompatible.

AND BOOOOOOOOM
you nailed it :)
That is one of the many many things I hate, when people try to compare two different universes that were never meant to be entangled. Trying to compare Ichigo and Naruto is one of the silliest things that can be done, when as you say, doing it seariously. It can be a fun thought process.
I've made a few AMVs in my days when trying to learn some basics in movie editing and one of them is a Edward Elric vs Naruto amv and I had a long thought on how to make the ending but I came up with the perfect solution :)
Thanks mate for your answer :D

thats just a way of going down point by point while keeping things neat and tidy

anyway...music

people talking shit about music seriously pisses me off (granted its actually not too bad here)

1. getting genres wrong. I'm guilty of it myself...but really horrendous stuff like getting Dubstep mixed up with the entire electronic genre...or putting the entire genre under he umbrella of "techno" is just..anoying

2. [b/]rap/electronic isnt music <-YES...yes it is...no sorry, this isnt up for debate..it is, get over it

3.[b/] "whats the point of this new fangled "lec-tronic" music?....it don't gots no emotion or nuthin" <- acording to you that is, a purely subjective point

4. [b/]I'm a teenager but I totally listen to old classics..because people my age are into crap no, your not a special snowflake..and no, that doesnt even mean your taste is better

5.[b/] "music thease days is terrible " *SLAP!* shut up! go on the internet and find somthing to your taste, thats what its there for

This post needs to be stickied. Dubstep is this generations's rock/metal, and clearly some people haven't learned from history.

Keyboard warriors who whine about the nonexistent "friendzone"(urgh, I don't like even having to type it) on the internet instead of doing something about it. It's not that bad on here, even if the occasional thread about it does pop up.

Also, as Vault puts it:

It doesn't really rile me up that much, because people who say things related to one of the five things she listed clearly have no idea what they're talking about. I just think it's pathetic that people can't just enjoy the music they listen, instead of having to justify their taste in music and feel better about it. Seriously, having a "better" taste in music makes you a better person? What the hell kind of twisted logic is that?

Idiotic fans.

If your going to complain about something/decry something you don't like, GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT.

For example, the people who complain that the Tyranids are rip offs of the Zerg.

Starcraft came out in 1998. Warhammer 40,000 came out in 1987.

I really dislike how the the internet gives all of us the ability to know anything about anything, right at our fingertips. Yet people still go around stating bullshit as fact.

I have an upload about Thrust SSC (the current land speed record holder) on YouTube. With alarming regularity, I get people commenting just to belittle the achievement, as well as to claim that we owe their country credit for inventing just about everything.

These people are 99% of the time Americans. Sorry all you normal people, but your country does have a significantly high dick-quota!

I seem to spend a great deal of time correcting people that claim the U.S. made everything.

Rockets (China way back, and Germany for more recent tech)
The ability to fly supersonic without crashing to the ground (Britain, the-all moving tailplane)
The world wide web (Tim Berners-Lee, Britain)
The automobile (Germany)
Jet engines (Frank Whittle, Britain)
Tanks (Lancelot De Mole, Australia)

Seriously, the list is fucking endless! To counter these idiots, I've spent a lot of time reading up on who invented what, and am now a bit of an encyclopaedia!

But that doesn't excuse everyone elses ignorance, or lack of desire to educate themselves.

So, on YouTube, I am now what I like to refer to as a 'fact-troll'. I win arguments with a calm tone and facts......stupid people don't like facts as they react to them like vampires do to a light sprinkling of holy water!

Well, there's a difference between thinking music is objectively bad and disliking it. There was actually a study done that demonstrated how music is becoming simpler and louder.

http://www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/2012/07/27/pop_music_is_getting_louder_and_dumber_says_one_study_here_s_what_they_miss_.html

Just thought I'd point that out, since I'm one of the people who enjoys complaining about the kids and their music these days. The study lamentably left out rhythm, but I think that the point it makes still stands.

You might want to hit the history books a bit, too. People complained ever so slightly about rock & roll and heavy metal when they were in their infancy - why would it not be the case with dubstep?. Dubstep is (unfortunately) this generation's rock/metal, but that doesn't mean I have to like it, or that I'm not allowed to criticize it for being the trash it is and/or ***** about how much I prefer Scandinavian power metal.

I feel your pain. I cannot count the number of times I've been brought to anger by some idiot vilifying a woman because she didn't want to sleep with him.

Anyway, OT:

- People complaining about grammar nazis/nazism. If it's so inconsequential, why can't you find and use the fucking shift key? (As an added note, my mother was actually not considered for a job due to a typo [Wilfred instead of Wilfrid] on her resume, so I've always realized that it can be and is important. But I digress.)

- Bacon/how awesome it is to eat meat/bashing vegetarians and vegans. Fuck Christ, you like the taste of meat, I fucking get it. Would you please just shut the fuck up about how great it is and how much you enjoy whacking off to EpicMealTime? If taste was the only issue at play, we would all eat meat all the time, and I'm aware of that. I'm pescetarian because it's healthier and because it's more sustainable, not because I like the taste of vegetables more than meat.

- Batman. There really aren't enough expletives in the English language to properly express how much I loathe Batman now that popular culture has gotten hold of him. He's cool, we get it. You liked The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, we get it. Please just stop talking about how Batman is a relatable and human protagonist without any superpowers, because a black belt in multiple forms of martial arts, someone who speaks more than a dozen languages, a billionaire playboy philanthropist genius who has literally developed a suit with the powers of Superman is not human, relatable, or without powers. Someone capable of doing all of that in half a lifetime is several orders of magnitude above an average human being.

There are more, but those are the ones that sprang to mind.

Sure they do, just not the people arguing. It's the people who read the arguments that are the target audience.

OT: I am terrible at keeping myself out of things. I've argued a lot of things, even on Youtube where I know what to expect. Religion, homophobia, racism are all button-pressers for me. And I can't resist the occasional spellcheck. I'll even go for people issuing blind praise on something or trying to suggest that something is deep and meaningful and being unable to explain when asked.

NO WAIT...THOSE F***ING COPYPASTA YOUTUBE COMMENTS. THAT IS THE THING I DESPISE MOST.

(and by extension, the uninspired use of memes. Memes are funny, but only a) the first time and b) when they're subverted.)

Captcha: spell this backwards: rorrim. I told it my name wasn't rorrim and entered siht, but it didn't appear to have worked. :/

The only thing for me is when people confuse "Scientific Theory" with a "Hypothesis".

"Oh, X is just a Theory, that means it's made up and isn't proven!"
*facepalm*
