Hey, i'm thinking of starting the persona series, and I was wondering if anyone could tell me (without any spoilers please) if I need to play them in order for them to make sense, or if they can be played stand-alone?

1, obviously, stands alone. It's not very good anyway, so I wouldn't bother.
2 is Japan only for the first half, but you can get the english patch. The sequel is much less enjoyable without the first but in an alternate continuity so still playable. Lots of references to 1 but no need to play it.
3 is basically a reboot, no need to play any of the previous.
4 has plenty of 3 references but once again stands on its own.

As far as I know Persona is the same as Final Fantasy in that respect (I.E. each game is a completely separate entity, story wise, and the only thing shared by all the games is the basic gameplay). So you should be able to start wherever you like.

The only ones I know of that have any sort of crossover are 3 and 4 and thats in the form of a couple of characters appearing, so story wise no you dont really need any experience with the series.
