So the idea is that it's crowd funded, lack of advertisers/investors means no one has influence over the news and everything gets reported fairly and without biases. Theres a paetron, whos link I won't post because I don't want to get nailed with moderation for advertising.

But there IS dissent amongst Phil doing this... DJ, KILLER, KEEMSTAR ("THE SLAYYYERRR~!") and well as resident Youtube Concious Colossal Is Crazy. have critized Phil for going for Paetron dollars when Phil's net worth is roughly a few million, and there is speculation he might end up flipping such a channel like he sold his previous company Source Fed.

Heres the youtube video where Keemstar debates the idea with Shot From The Puck host Tommy C.

Now personally? I'm donating to it. I've been watching this PhilyD guy for about a year now, I've found his channel very informative and I very much want to support unbiased news. I mean I already listen to the PBS News Hour podcast, but I want a supplemental to that.

But as always, WHAT SAY YOU ESCAPIST?!?!

Fairly and without biases... I don't know who this guy is but it's not as if the source of the money is the sole source of bias or bad reporting.

Interesting. I'm not even going to doubt his ability to make it fair and balanced. Every video of his I've seen has always come across as being pretty fair and balanced. Let's see if it has any legs.

I mean did he not already have one? And is it THAT big a deal? Worthy of ALL CAPS?
His channel was run under Discovery Networks, and apparently Phil was pretty annoyed at them interfering in how he covered stories, including their pressure for him to endorse Hillary Clinton during the campaign. He's said publicly he didn't feel it was right for him to tell other people who to vote for.

I haven't seen a video of his since like 2010. I'm honestly surprised he's been keeping up for so long.

I've recently and suddenly heard his name pop up multiple times in both forums and real-life. Maybe it's time to give him another look.

im under the impression that it's going to be like what the Young Turks do... it's goal is a 24/7 News Stream.

That sounds... ambitious. So, he wants to create the first internet CNN, basically?

How would advertisers affect the fairness of the reporting on Youtube? Do other channels do half-hour long in depth pieces about how books are killing the rainforests and coincidentally you can use their code to get a free audiobook on Audible today? Or how a cheap plastic toy from Loot Crate saved a man's life?

If anything, with Patreon they're bound to be even more biased, because while you never want to upset your audience, if a small portion of that audience is responsible for all the funding behind your show then you really don't want those people to stop giving you money.

That is whats implied, though as others have pointed out he actually hasn't clearly laid out his vision.

Right now advertisers are able to "censor" youtube news channels because if you even so much as talk about something that is considered "upsetting", for example anything having to do with abortion, your monetization is taken away.

I think you have a fair criticism of the paetron, but I can't see anyone other than people like me who have followed this guy for a while and not only trust but like the way he trys to present a balance news coverage would want to throw their dollars at it.

Ya know, I'm a pretty Liberal person but I get pretty pissed off when I see shit like today Vox plugging "Woman arrested and tried for laughing at Jeff Sessions" when that headline isn't accurate. They tried to kick her out of the event for laughing, and only arrested her after she attempted to make a scene because she was a code pink protester.

Thats the anti-thesis of what I'm expecting I'll get when I hand him my $10 dollars tomorrow. No sensationalized bullshit for clicks and dollars, just the truth.

It'd be neat.

I'm down...if Mr. D can tone down the clickbaity nature of his video titles to fit the new format, I mean.

I like his content and he seems like a decent guy. Let's see how it goes.

I might have used the wrong word, but I thought my examples would have made it clear.

I wasn't talking about Youtube placing ads on the video, I was talking about sponsors. The same 5 or 6 ones that seems to sponsor every podcast and video creator on the internet: Audible, Loot Crate, Blue Apron, Mack Weldon, etc. He could get sponsors just fine and not need to resort to Patreon money.

Don't really like the guy, he got to the top using manipulative click bait, jump cuts every 2 seconds and I noticed his "outrage" involving child abuse cause him to make videos on it over and over again, basically manipulating it for personal gain.

I've been watching him for over a year, I don't find anything you say founded. He only did follow ups to the Daddy O Five story because the abusive father who shoved his son into a bookcase took shots at "That defranco guy" and Phil was right that it wasn't his fault, that there was serverly something wrong with those parents if they couldn't look at the video they themselves had produced to youtube and not thought "Hey maybe someone would get the wrong idea seeing me shove my son into a bookcase"
