Pikmin's future

I'm not doubting that there are Pikmin fans, but how many would genuinely be upset if Olimar wasn't in the new Smash? Or how many would buy a console for a Pikmin game? Heck, how many people are willing to click on this thread because it has Pikmin on the title? Pikmin as franchise is a paradox: they're real-time strategy games, but they're sold on console; it presents itself as a cutesy and cartoony game for kids, but it is hard and demanding from its player and it guilt-trips you for the horric stuff it happens within the cutesy facade. This is one IP quite hard to wrap your head around.

I think Pikmin's charm and appeal lies on how it basically refuses to be categorized by anything, it's a collection of ideas somewhat done before, yet it's unique. It's a "niche" game in its most pure form (it's one of the IPs created by Miyamoto, a game that prioritizes fun), a genre of games that, in recent years, if it fails to sell it gets canned forever.

But sadly, in recent years, there are only two ways you can look at it: Pikmin is either a franchise that gives people hope for the AAA market as games like it, Grow Up, and others show that they still think about the niche market... OR Pikmin is something Nintendo is doomed to waste money, time, effort to desperately to catch on, that not only doesn't sell their systems, but alienates its installbase and serves to highlight lack of quality control among that company.

You may be confused by the latter argument so let me tell you this: Pikmin 3 was hinted at by Miyamoto back in 2007, people wouldn't hear about it again until 2011 as they confirmed it was moved to the Wii U and that it existed, and in the Iwata Asks segments, somehow they failed to bring this game up. Here's the theory that's been circulating around Miyamoto keeps bluffing to the news sites that they are making the game, and the investors have no option but to let it happen, because with Pikmin 3 only recently reaching 1 Million copies sold and Shigsy saying there are more games on the way, there is definitely something fishy going on there, how is there with many GameCube classics, Pikmin is getting all of this "love"?

Yeah, the future ain't looking good for it, regardless of NX's performance, Pikmin's days might counted. What do you think? Is Pikmin worthy of being a AAA franchise or a complete waste of time, effort and resources that could go into something else?

Hahaha, I've been actually wanting to talk about Pikmin for a little while so I'm gonna use this thread as an opportunity to say that the 6-day Pikmin speedruns are absolutely incredible:
And the same goes for the perfect challenge mode runs.

I haven't played Pikmin 3 since I don't have a Wii-U. Pikmin 2 kind of sucked though. I wanted to like the game, and it did make a lot of improvements, but it ended up being really tedious since roughly 70% of the game was boring randomly generated caves.

If there was a Pikmin game on the 3DS, I'd buy it.

Edit: You know what I'd like in a Pikmin game? A reason to grow more than 100 pikmin of each colour (I don't know if there was one in Pikmin 3). I like growing pikmin, but unless you are losing tons of pikmin every day there isn't any reason to grow a quarter as many as you can.

I got the original Pikmin some time ago but didn't put a lot of time into it since I got it at a time when I was building up a backlog of older games that I had missed out on. I recall liking it a bit but being put off by the internal clock and time limit but after beating Majora's Mask I'm more willing to go back and give it a try. It'll probably be a while though since I also got Pikmin 3 and want to beat that too. I picked up Pikmin 3 at launch and played a lot of it but a move and lifestyle change lead to me losing a lot of time to really game. Once I got that time back though I moved on to other games...

I did really like Pikmin 3 while I played it though: I thought the bosses I fought were really imaginative but above all else, Pikmin 3 is the most visually impressive game I've seen on the Wii U. Woolly World is a close second visually but Pikmin 3 just made my jaw drop the first time I booted it up and saw the little pond on those rocks.

I'm cautiously optimistic for Pikmin 3DS but I'm hoping the true Pikmin 4 is coming on the NX, even if we wind up not getting it until 2018 or 2019.

I really can't wait until about...10 hours from now when I can stop calling it the NX...

Pikmin was one of the games that made me decide to buy a Gamecube, way back in 2001. I remember playing it and Luigi's Mansion on one of those demo stands over and over and being absolutely amazed. There's something about using your pikmin to murder all the wildlife and drag back their corpses to make more and more pikmin that is just fun.

Oh, a sidescroller? I don't know how I feel about that... It kind of looks like it's lost everything that I actually liked about Pikmin.

I think it's a natural step, the 3DS is fairly powerful I'll give it that, but I don't think it has enough horsepower to pull off 100 creatures with individual AI in a open world, the Pikmin number would have to decrease and I don't think a limited 3D one is better than a 2D one.

I like the Pikmin games, and the co-op challenegs in Pikmin 3 were fun to play with my Brother!
Olimar isn't my favorite character in Smash but he's alright.
I'll play a new pikmin, I won't buy a console for a Pikmin game, but then again just 1 game will never make me buya console.

Like Yahtzee said, its like the trenches of the Somme in Pikmin. And that's where it should go! A Pikmin themed mod for Toy Soldiers, where hundreds of the little shits charge blissfully into the exploding shells and gaping maws of the giant robot monsters on the other side of the field.
Embrace the genocide! Embrace the fact its just an attrition based RTS without the gore!
