The clip from before the fire ships show up is especially hair raising.
At one point, they pan the shot to shot the oil rig and it's small in comparison (edit: the rig is small compared to the fire)

How does it catch fire in the first place? Not usually many ignition sources in the ocean I would think.

I would suspect some of the watertight (and highly electrical) equipment used to drill/funnel the stuff up to the surface, got damaged in some way, had some sparks happen. Open sparks under high pressure with volatile chemicals....boom.

Sigh ... goddammit Internet!
I actually find that really depressing. Before I'd even HEARD about the incident, I learned about it via that gif. So it's already psychologically downplayed coming out of the gate.

Because it's the internet.
The internet certainly knows how to play fast and loose on what memes are important and which ones aren't or considered old hat. I have nothing against the meme itself, but I figured it was one of those memes that would be forgotten about within two or three years. Just goes to show how powerful it is.

It's fundamental use tends to be similar to rickrolling, in that it gets deployed to taunt people in an slightly obnoxious way. So...it's basically immortal.
