I have had my xbox one since summer and I had a account on my 360 but my gold membership was expired. Since i got my xbox one I have been playing online without paying and when I try to use any of the gold membership things like games for gold I doesn't let me. So I was wonderring do you need gold to play online.

Yes you do (unless it has changed very recently).

You are either getting a glitch (likely since the games for gold thing doesn't work) or your credit card is on the account and you were auto-renewed.

You would be able to access apps (like Netflix) without gold but it should not allow you to play online without it.

You need XBL Gold to play pretty much anything online under the sun on the 360/One. Even F2P games last I checked. If a game is online only (ala Destiny), you still need XBL Gold to play the game at all. Same goes for games like TES Online (whenever that comes out) which needs XBL Gold on top of the game's subscription fee, unless that gets changed. They did recently roll back some of the paywalls on services such as IE, YouTube and Netflix (still requires NF subscription), so there's that.

Destiny works to a point without Gold, you can play the campaign and connect to the auth servers, but you cannot enter PvP, raids or play in groups, which is 90% of Destiny.
