After I sort of fell in love with Gwent I'm looking for a similar style of card game. Hearthstone is cool and all but offline play against AI is a must due to my line of work. MTG would be an obvious thing to look at but there are so many games and so many iterations I wouldn't know where to start. So any suggestions are much appreciated.
Check out Magic Duels it is free and available on Steam. It has "campaigns" with pre-determined decks that you can play trough and the AI is decent if not outstanding. It also serves as a pretty good introduction to the rules of Magic: The Gathering and has a pretty good Deck Wizard to help people get started with basic arch-types.
It kinda suffers from Heathstone RNG with certain effects. That and limited reaction if at all. At least Hearthstone let you put down Secrets with certain classes to prep for something. Also I think it's online mainly. Dunno if it can be played offline. Still a good game that doesn't get the attention it should.
If you can play online and for short games(time), Urban Rivals. It's pretty fast but the least like a normal CCG.
I recently started playing Pokemon and changed the rules as they tend to benefit whoever is winning. But have yet to be able to try the new system as I am currently building a few decks to try it with the kids. Its basically the classic rule but:
1. No doubles of Pokemons in your deck.
2. Once a Pokemon evolves, its bottom skill now require you to remove and discard an energy card to use it. If the skill says to remove one, you remove 2.
3. Having your pokemon get knocked out gives you a "prize card" instead. If you run out of "prize cards", you lose.
I tend to play with 8-10 prize cards. Rule #2 will make some pokemon really horrible and not worth it but these rules should make the game much more interesting. I am revising the rules for battle arena play with 3+ players. These rules were made for that but with those rule a 1 vs 1 match could be played. For 3+ players, you need a tablecloth you can draw hexagons on with marker to make a play field. Simlar to this:
Battle Arnea rules:
First, each player establishes a tile where their pokemon always enter the arena for the game. You could mark these also when you make the tablecloth.
1. Benched pokemon are not on tiles.
2. All pokemon move 1 tile per move.
3. Every turn your active pokemon can either move twice, or move once and attack once.
4. Attacking/Actons by your active pokemon does not end your turn. However, you may only do 1 action/attack per turn.
5. Retreating is an action.
6. You must be adjacent to a pokemon to attack it.
