Pokemon - Is it worth me getting back into it?

So I was going through a few YouTube videos a few days back, and I happened upon a Let's Play by one of the people I follow, where they went through some of the latest Pok?mon games, Sun and Moon. I watched it for a bit and I thought to myself, "huh, this looks pretty fun". After that, I started doing some digging about the games and seeing all the rave reviews about it, and as such, I started thinking that maybe it's be worth getting the game myself.

But the problem I have is this. It's been a LONG time since I had anything to do with Pok?mon. Sure, like a lot of kids back then, I was hyped about it as all Hell. I watched the TV show, collected the cards (though I don't actually remember playing any games with them if I'm honest), and of course, I had some of the video games. And while I loved them at the time, I eventually stopped, like a lot of people did. So Pokemon, for me, is just something that I knew was still popular, but could never bring myself to get back into.

And just to make the choice even more difficult for me, I know full well that the games will probably be completely unrecognisable to me from what I knew them to be back in the day. Just to give some context, the last game in this franchise I ever touched was the original Silver Version, back when it was first released in 2001. So yeah, chances are the game will be pretty different from what I was used to.

So, that's the question. Is it worth me trying to get back into these games, given just how long it's been seven I've had anything to do with Pok?mon?

Oh, and one other question. If the general consensus is that I SHOULD get back into it, would the Sun version be better, or the Moon version? Because I don't really want to have to do that whole "get both of them" thing that they keep doing.

I feel like the jump to full 3D Pokemon games on a handheld was a great thing, and I quite liked X&Y myself. I got Moon version, and I had a lot of fun. It was quite challenging, the way they shook things up was nice, and the new villains "Team Skull" were full of personality and I loved them for it. Sun and Moon did a little bit to shake up the formula, rather than just "Eight gyms, then go to the Pokemon league." Also, HM moves are now TM moves, and you can use specific Pokemon given to you to use the old HM moves in the world without tying down a Pokemon as a HM whore.

There's a lot of little improvements this generation did to make me think that yeah, it'd be a good time. Depending on when you have time to play, I'd consider one version over the other. Sun's clock is the same as normal, but in Moon it's 12 hours apart. So if you play Sun at 1PM, it'll be 1AM in Moon. It's weird, I spent most of my time in the dark, but I didn't mind much. I like Lunala more than Solgalio. Though, Sun had some exclusive Pokemon I wanted.

I'd say go for it, it couldn't hurt. There's a lot of fancy new things you might like or dislike. I know I never once used a Z move, a thing introduced in this game, cause I'm a bit of a purist in that sense. But if you like what you saw, I'm sure you'll have fun!

If you're worried about the games being hard...then I suppose Sun and Moon will be good for you, since they are heavily dumbed down. Not that Pokemon was the most complicated thing to have enough of an understanding of.

I beat Sun without reading anything, mostly out of spite for the fact that the game basically has quest arrows now. Just go to flag and fight whoever.

Just uh, prepare for railroading and tons of cutscenes.

Also if you want the game to be even easier, doing the thing where you pet your pokemon or clean it up post battle, eventually it will give you random bonuses, like critical hits or avoiding attacks for otherwise no reason.

Yes, it is worth it. Personally I think X/Y were better games to get back. You got to catch lots of first-gen Pokemon, looking as close to their TV show counterparts as they could be (even with attack animations). You have the chance of get one of the Red/Blue starters at some point. I haven't played Sun and Moon yet, but I have heard it's better than X/Y.

Sure, why not? The new game is still user friendly to the newcomers.

Also I suggest getting Sun just so that you don't get confuse with the time difference.

campaign is lame nowadays.

however actual multiplayer battling itself is still pretty fun. it's even more fun now with stuff like Battle Royales being added to the game. free all matches are so much more fun than regular 1 on 1 or doubles matches imo.

that isn't hard to do though tbh. both XY and Sun/Moon were terrible.

campaign is way to handholdy nowadays. also the kid Hau in sun and moon is an annoying little shit.

You know, a ton of people say this for the later Pokemon games, but I wonder... When there they ever NOT? Like, sure, in the older games they didn't always specifically tell you stuff, but the games always were held down to the fact you go down the next route to the next town, do a few things, go down the next route since there's only 2-3 options, then hit the gym in the next town and repeat. The "hand holding" really just boils down to dialogue telling you where to go, or a flag that shows you... But chances are you'd go that way anyways if it were an older title. Do people just not like being told this stuff? I guess that would be how you define "hand holding"

I wont pretend they were some massive open world Elder Scrolls affair, but hell, even the "dungeons" are linear now.

And too many times you are asked "Do you wanna___" and your choices are almost literally "Yes or Yes".

Yeah, that's fair. I never got why I'm being asked those questions in the first place if it's only gonna change the next singular line of dialogue

If the games are just going to be super linear, they could atleast be fun. The constant talking and (shitty) plot and cutscenes...its like they are competing with Metal Gear Solid 4.

A few times I just put my 3DS down and did something else for a bit, or watched Youtube while spamming A.

The plots of these games are never great. The fun stuff is (depending on person) catching, raising, collecting, breeding, and battling Pokemon.

If anything, they should reduce the plot and make the game more open.

the earlier games gave you a lot more freedom to explore and do your own thing.

Sun & Moon literally puts you on linear paths and force's you to go that red flag marker by putting obstacles in your way where the game tells you to go back until you complete said objective which is really annoying.
