I would try for one of everything, but that;s impossible. I find my best combination is:
Fire, Water, Grass, Electric, Psychic, Flying

It doesn't mater what Pokemon you have, so long as one of them is Octillery. Octillery is the shit.

6 Charizard.

But really, I agree with the fire, water, grass, electric, psychic and flying. It's pretty well rounded except I'm a bad trainer and I can only manage adequately training like, 3 or 4 Pokemon at once. It's sad.

A Sweeper, this pokemon is preferably fast that covers one spectrum of attacks (As an example Infernape learns Fire, Grass, Fighting, Flying, Electric attacks and works as a Mixed Sweeper.)

A Scout, this Pokemon is good for sending out first when the enemy sends out their pokemon, then U-Turning/Baton Passing the fuck out of there (Ninjask learns Speed Boost letting you raise one BLT of speed then Passing it onto the next pokemon)

A Tank, be it physical or special this pokemon SOAKS SHIT UP, see Blissey who exists to wall crap and nothing else, your enemy will waste there PP and energy trying to kill it.

Hazer, Your enemy will be stat boosting and stat decreasing to win right? one Haze and it's all gone.

Spikestormer. Whats worse than a wall? A wall that uses Sandstorm, spreads spikes and sets up stealth rock. There pokemon exist to soak damage while fucking you up when you send a new pokemon in.

Rapid Spinner, to counter the afformentioned Spike Stormer.
I remember Fortress being good for its ability to lay spikes and use rapid spin.

I always liked to mess with people via a deceptive pokemon. Pick any pokemon that looks completetly harmless, increase all of its stats and give it the best attacks possible. I had a lvl 100 Seedot that knew solarbeam, razor leaf, vine whip, and sleep powder. That little thing was deadly. I also had a crazy lvl 100 mudkip that knew hydro pump, earthquake, hydro cannon, and slash. It was fun to watch them to beat the crap out of my friends' legendary pokemon.

I can't say how well this may or may not work, but my team usually consisted of a fighting type (Machoke/Machamp), an electric type (Zapdos in the first generation, Denryu in the second), a psychic type (Kadabra/Alakazam), an ice/water type (Lapras or i guess a Seel/Dewgong, and a rock/earth type(Graveler/Golem), with the last slot being something i never fully considered. If you can get one of the others as a flying or dark type, then you could put the remainder type in here; if not, try for a Murkrow, i guess.

This is, of course, excpting gyms. When that happens, i just go balls to the wall with specific elements.

Don't listen to this guy. It's nothing but horrible information.
Your party should be nothing but Shuckles.

I used:
Electric
Dragon
Ice/Water
Steel/something combo
Psychic
Then maybe another dragon (or my starter).
Most of them were never pure so they would be fairly balanced.

I use the following normally:

Flying
Fire
Electric
Water
Psychic
Ice

However, I prefer overall to use an Eevee party (I rarely use Fly, and I can always keep a Pidgeotto or something in a PC for when I do use it). In which case I use this party:

Flareon (Fire)
Glaceon (Ice)
Vaporeon (Water)
Espeon (Psychic, and my favourite)
Umbreon (Dark, and my second favourite)
Jolteon (Electric)

Easily the best party I can think of... :)

I usually go a good number of dual-type pokemon mixed with single-types. Example, my Diamond version team:

Feraligatr (Water)
Houndoom (Fire/Dark)
Hypno (Psychic)
Lucario (Steel/Psychic)
Sceptile (Grass)
Garchomp (Dragon/Ground)
