So Pokemon's finally gone full 3D. But the graphics are still kinda outdated. And they're making even more unnessecary Pokemon.

Thoughts?

[EDIT: Threads merged, the following is an OP infodump]
[EDIT: 9/1 Legendary names added. Boring.]

So, the Nintendo Direct just unveiled the new Generation 6 Pokemon games. Look to be set in a new Europe-esque region (after Gen5's America). It's a 3DS game and... well... Look at it.

Simultaneous world wide release this October. Dropping the 2D battle system. Looks like a big deal for the series.

Thought? Opinions?

I'm cautiously optimistic, and to me it certainly looks more interesting than Gen 4 or 5 did at this stage.

And here are the new legendaries, along with which game they're likely to be in based on name, colour and shape, but B/W did it the other way around so who knows?

And here's the full 10 minute Nintendo Direct video announcement, though there's not much to it except emphasizing the world wide simultaneous release.

Are there actually any other new pokemon apart from the 3 starters and the two legendaries? Because that footage didn't show any other pokemon apart from them at all. Mind you, if they didn't introduce another 100 I'd be mighty pleased with that. I'm just wondering.

They always only show the starters first. But by rule of thumb: New Gen = New critters.

Edit: The footage also shows the new legendaries.
I see, well ... it should be alright I suppose. Can't say the water type starter looks appealing but I still feel optimistic about this one.

Yeah, the footage only shows the 5 iconic 'mons so far. That's generally what they try to do with new generations. And the phrase 'Next generation' was definitely used in the announcement, so it's officially generation 6.

If it's anything like previous gens, the total number of Pokémon will now be in the high 700s. Damn.

I really need to finish Black 2. Stupid busy life.

I for one am bloody excited for it, those animations look awesome and it's about time they stopped using sprites.

They haven't said anything about how many new Pokemon there will be, probably because they haven't finalised it yet.

My guess would be that since older Pokemon were shown in the footage, they aren't going to be like Black and White and have 150+ new ones that are the only ones you can find pre-Elite Four. They usually start revealing the new designs a few at a time leading to launch so I guess we'll have to wait to find out how many more are needed to catch 'em all.

I'm really glad that they're going 3D. I love sprites, but with all the zooming in and moving around that the camera does in battles now they start to look distorted.

As for the starters, I like them. I really like Fennekin, we've never really had a feminine fire starter before. Also I think we can safely assume it won't be another Fire/Fighting, although I said the same thing about Tepig =(

And simultaneous world release is pretty impressive. We're even apparently going to get it here in Australia the same day everyone else, something that publishes with games that don't need to be localised fail at routinely.

Looks interesting.

I would like to see a little more about how combat would look, whether each move would come with its own animation or just 3 generic animations that get used over and over again. But regardless, I'd most likely turn the animations off for the sake of expediency.

Though, on a completely different note, it's only 7 weeks until Etrain Odyssey 4 comes out!

Oh, look at that. Now I need a 3DS.

I'm really liking the graphical shift for these games. I think it's the sensible step, and it looks like they'll be using the 3DS' power to make a nice halfway point between fully realised 3D models and the classic Pokemon top-down display.

I don't know what to make of the starters yet. I quite like the Fire-type starter though - it looks rather cute. It also looks like we might be avoiding the Fire-Fighting trend with this one as well as I can't really see it getting any Fighting traits.

As for the legendaries - the flying Dragon-esque one looks kinda like an evil cross between Lugia, Zoroark and the Lati- Pokemon. It looks alright. I do like the look of the other though - the Forest God type one. Very Princess Mononoke.

Good stuff. Colour me interested.

I approve of the graphical changes.
The starters (at least the first stages) are meh, although I like the fire starter. We've already had Vulpix, but maybe this one will evolve into something that's not like Ninetails, and hopefully have a better moveset. Chespin looks too much like Oshawott but grass themed instead of water.

I like the bird legendary, could do without the deer (It reminds me too much of Sawsbuck), they don't look like they'll be dragon types, which is a plus at this point.

It's pretty cool that the bird's silhouette in the trailer is a "Y".

Between this, Fire Emblem Awakening, The Ocarina of Time remake, The Kingdom Hearts game, the Tales of Abyss port, and probably some other games I'm forgetting about, it looks like it's time to buy a 3DS.

As for the starter Pokemon, I like the look of the fire one. I always went with the fire starter up until gen5 because frankly Tepig was shit. I just hope it's not another fire/fighting type when it evolves. I can't speak for the video since YouTube doesn't work for me at work so I'll have to check that out later.

But to be completely honest, I'm glad my 3DS will actually get some use. I haven't touched the damn thing since I bought it on release. Where the hell did I put that thing anyway?

The fire one is pretty much a direct copy of Vulpix.
Here's hoping it's a dual type that isn't Fire/Fighting. And hope it evolves into something other than another Kitsune.
Based on it's name "Fennikin" It's based on a Fennec fox rather than a red fox.

I don't think it will look like Ninetails in the end, since it gets three stages instead of two. I really hope it's not fire/fighting though.

If it does take a Ninetails turn, I'm also hoping it doesn't end up looking anything like this...

Ummm... I don't think they're going to show all of the Pokemon in a small teaser trailer. They only show the main ones which will be featured to show that there will be new Pokemon in the next games. Also, they've already done four games on the 5th gen Pokemon, I doubt that they'd make ANOTHER 2 games featuring those Pokemon.
Well I was kinda hoping they'd show us at least one other pokemon just so I could get a feel as to whats out there to catch, although what you said makes sense.

For me personally: There wasn't an unevolved, appealing starter for me in the first place. Unless they have a fuck-ugly final form I also don't really care because I won't look at that image very long. Or I just replace it during playtime (I replaced my waterstarter in Pokemon Black with Kingdra after it became avaiable).
Yeah, that's fair enough. Anyways, Fennekin looks good to me so that will at least prevent the rare problem of me not being able to beat the first gym because I projectile vomit whenever I send out my hideous starter - so all's good.

OK, first, that is one of the cutest pictures I've ever seen. Thank you.

And I hope it's not a Renamon, though it totally could be. And that would probably make it fire/fighting.

Also, just hit me that the first 3d Pokémon games are going to be called X/Y/Z, as in the three dimensions.
