What is it with this explosion of Pokemon? I used to like watch that stuff when I was a kid you know, these days everywhere I lookemon, Pokemon! Pokemon! Pokemon! Is it really that popular and entertaining? By the natural law of crappy gimmicks shouldn't it be burried treasure? Only to be later printed on nostalgia maps for the up and coming generation of 30 somethings? Has there been nothing else of creative value for children to encapsulate their small minds, while freeing their parents wallets from that money stuff?

Why is this Pokemon still around?

And then it broke hte stereotype and had a kickass sequel gen.

It is staying alive from that nostalgia. People are convinced they'll get the same pleasure they got from those.

Oh, and everyone wants to be a Pokemon master. I cry that I'll never havea scizor or nidoking.

Because it's a game like Mario, you can pick it up play for a bit then put it back down again. Makes it a good game for travelling or just filling in time.

"Crappy gimmicks"? Really? The concept of monster hunting, capturing, and fighting with them is no more a gimmick than the concept of shooting your enemy: it's a core gameplay principle to certain genres of games. Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker did it, Pokemon does it, and a lot of other games do it. It's no gimmick, it's a tried, tested, and entertaining gameplay staple.

Honestly pokemon games have decent strategy elements and it's something that's easy to re-skin and revive when necessary.

I lost my love for Pokemon quite a while ago and I too am surprised by its longevity. But congrats to the people still making those games. Pokemon has lasted a lot longer than many other gaming legends.

It may be one of those gimmicks but they pulled it off so well, while they did make more and more games they didn't make the mistake of say SEGA and change any of the core formula. They didn't force a retarded story down your throat. The game is simple, catch pokemon, beat gym leaders, kick Team Rocket out of towns. It's the simplicity of a arcade game in a RPG, but you can also go fairly hardcore I guess.

I only beat Red and Blue way back when and my copy of silver was stolen from me before I got to meet the 2nd gym leader, so I'm getting the remake to basically see what I missed. From what I gather it's better than red and blue because it HAS red and blue in it. Or something to that extent, we'll see wont we?

i Don't know myself. personally the game doesn't have very much going for it, without a clear class system it just seems like all Pokemon are carbon copies of each other but with different attacks and some slight stat differences. personally i outgrew Pokemon after gold, moved on to more complex things.

I am confus. This thread appears to be indicating that Pokemons have not been everywhere for the last bozillion years at least.

And no, this is not the height of the public visibility of Pokemon, that was in about 1999/2000 or so, when my town even had a dedicated Pokemon shop (not even slightly official, of course) to shill the CCG.
