In the latest episode of 30 Rock (TGS Hates Women) there's a couple rather harsh surprises at the end. First let me point out that the comedic tactic known as a "reversal" is as common as day and night. The zany nature of 30 Rock often relies on this trick just to keep the madness coming.

But I've been watching less and less of the show lately, because of the dreaded 5th season blues. So these particular "reversals" felt pretty harsh. There's a word for what they really are: AUDIENCE MANIPULATION

What a cold even cruel trick to play on your viewers. Are the writers of 30 Rock just getting cynical?

That was actually the first full episode of the show I've watched, and I thought it was pretty good.

What was cold or cruel or harsh about it? Aside from making light of stalking, but it gets a pass on that for being a comedy show.

I haven't watched Season 5 yet.

I so wish I could have.

EDIT: As for the question, I have no idea. I can't see it being too bad though.

There was a definite drop in quality for the first few episodes of this season, but the lastest episodes have redeemed it. These reversals you're talking about are simply there for 30 Rock to assert itself as a show that will not let any "message", political or otherwise, get in the way of what the show is actually about: daring humour.

I understand that this particular reversal (and others from throughout 30 Rock's run) may make you feel uncomfortable, and that's fine, there's nothing wrong with that. Some might even argue that's what they're supposed to do. But they don't signify a decline in the show's quality.

Personally, I wholeheartedly look forward to seeing how Jack's new rivalry will play out, and I'd like to also point out that even at its absolute lowest points, 30 Rock is still drastically better than 99% of the drivel on TV.
