I THINK MODERN WARFARE IS REALLY GREAT WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK!?
No, I'm kidding, this is not another MW2 thread.

I'm sure you have all noticed the introduction of 3D movies in cinemas, the technology has been there for a while but it has only just made it into high budget block busting films. Sure you have to wear a pair of glasses to be able to see it properly, but the net effect is positive as the perception of depth is improved for the viewer and you can *wince* have things pop out at you. The wince is because final destination was particularly annoying in that sense.

What I put to you, people of the escapist, is whether 3D technology like this should come to gaming. Would it be a good idea? Could it improve the experience? Could you bear to wear strange glasses while playing?

Personally, I can see potential for it in many first person games, as it would improve immersion in some senses but only if done well. Other genres may have more trouble integrating it successfully.
Although I doubt that I can comment without trying it, I feel that the glasses would get on my nerves though.

It could, but really ony in FPS's, and if a bullet hits you in the face, that would scare the hell out of me.

I might play it though, sounds like a new gimmick though.

That was a misleading title, I thought you meant the 3D we already had.

On topic: Yeah, if they did it right, then that would be awesome.

If they force me to hurt my eyes and strain to see in the blue and red glasses, then no, I'll pass.

Mmm I did consider that but I didn't really know what else to call it.

I read somewhere Fallout 3 looks great in 3D.
I also read somewhere that 3D without the glasses may be possible in the near future.
But, smells would be fudging AWESOME so I voted that instead.
SOME smells...
Others, not so much.

It would be either a terrifying experiment, or something to fuck around with.
Bullets popping at you would be scary to be honest.

It's an okay idea, really, with or without the glasses. But i want smell instead - i'd love the smell of napalm in the morning.

I don't know.

I think it would cause a sh*t load of headaches. If it's for some spectacular IMAX movie, fine. But I wouldn't like to have it everywhere.

Untrue.

Tried the NVidia NFS: Shift 3D demo at Eurogamer and it was almost enough to make me buy the game (until I realised there would be no 3D on Xbox :/). The sense of depth provided by the 3D glasses in the cockpit view was sublime.

There will be monitors that will have the same effect as the 3d with the glasses but you wont need to wear the glasses but they will costs loads

Anyway i dont like the 3dness, it ruins the quality of the picture, i prefer a really good 2d image to a crappy blurred 3d one.

Honestly, if I could ever get to try out something in 3D i'm sure it would fertilize my egg in a matter of seconds. But I have neither the money NOR opportunity to do stuff like that.

Ok let me Re phrase it then, First Person Games... since you described the cockpit view was good, that is pretty much FP

I'd imagine it would be cool at 1st... then get boring after a while.

I mean look at how back at the start of the decade we were all getting sick of that bit in The Matrix being referenced by everyone. Was cool to see once, but not constantly.

FPS and RPGs can benefit from this technology HOWEVER you need a very high refresh rate on you monitor to use 3D without having your brains explode.

The refresh rate for "I would still like to see and not have my brains coming out of my ears after" is around 180. And no, there is no typo.

This refresh rate is possible for PC monitors and your PC but if you want to take the technology to the consoles you will find out that almost no HDTV has that kind of refresh rate. This and the fact that the games using 3D will be slightly uglier (because 3D costs resources) than the rest of the games.

Personally I`ve tried a console game that has 3D on a big ass HDTV made of magical obsidian that has a world drop (if you get the Yahzee / MMO reference ) and I was trying to stick the brains back into my head after approximately 10 minutes of game-play.

I don't want the glasses as long as they remain those stupid big things you get in actual/ 3d simulation's that utilize technology comparable to game engines (it's not the same as those dull paper things you get at the cinema)
And we'd probably need to research if it has any nasty side effects if you play to long otherwise we'll just keep on going with the !!!ZOMG I HAET_GAMEZ.RAAAH_3DPIXELZ!!! journalism.
