Has anyone else noticed this. Andrew Ryan has the same initials as Ayn Rand (author of Atlas Shrugged). I was wondering if you guys thought this was intentional or significant?

Let's use the spoiler boxes on this thread.

Not just the initials, Andrew Ryan is an anagram of Ayn Rand, with a few extra letters.
I'm pretty sure this was intentional.
They kinda based the whole game around her books. Atlas Shrugged mainly.

Bioshock is supposed to be an attack on Objectivist views. Rand is objectivist. So yes it's intentional and significant.

Oh and
Atlas Fontaine=Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead. Two of her books

You shall not pass!
Could be a reference to a book, not really anything important, just a nod of sorts.

OT: Who are these people?
One is a video game character and the other is a HARDCORE right wing author from the middle of the 20th century. Her philosophy on the market is to let it do whatever it wants and it will be the best for everyone. That theory is quickly being debunked as utter bullocks.

Re-arrange Andrew Ryan and you get this- We R Ayn Rand.

It's pretty fucking obvious, as in people were discussing this when Bioshock 1 was released. If you're only noticing now then well, pay more attention.

So? They took an author whos beliefs towards society is similar to the idea of Bioshock, and got a name out of it. Intentional and insignificant.

No, it is not. It presents Objectivism from a neutral standpoint, showing it's pros and cons, and lets the player decide whether or not they agree with Ryan's philosophy. If you'll remember Rapture was brought down when Ryan stopped abiding by the rules of his own philosphy, turning him into a tyrant.

Yes, it's kind of obvious. Granted I didn't notice it the first time, but that was because I'd never even heard of Objectivism at that point in life.

Laissez Faire right?
Taken to the extreme. Essentially, any and all limitations and controls in place over people, be they governmental, fiscal, or spiritual, should be removed. Essentially "Let everyone do as they please, then everyone will be happy".

It's the kind of thing that would work, if everyone wholeheartedly believed in/supported it. As soon as one person does not, the whole thing falls apart.

Also, this. Bioshock is basically a primer on Objectivist philosophy, and shows what can happen if/when it fails.

Bioshock 2 is essentially the same thing, except for a Collectivist philosophy.

Well, what's wrong with it if it is? If Ryan's ideas are similar to Rand's, then it makes sense to me: what's the big deal? I'm not really familiar with her work, so don't consider me the definitive voice on the issue, but if Ryan's ideas are similar, why is this an issue...?

More then Laissez Faire. Objectevists believe, fundamentally in "I got mine, Jack". During Bioshock you can hear Ryan go on rants about the evils of altruism. Objectivists believe anything that doesn;t serve the self, destroys the self. Rapture was the ultimate logical conclusion of the Objectevist ideal. Charity is 'parasitic'. 'Pull yourself up by your bootstraps' mentality.

Rapture actually worked except Ryan flipped the fuck out when he lost control, and refused to 'lose' even when the 'great chain' pulled away from him. Though with Plasmids, collapse was probably inevitable.

Gandalf's pimpin' yo

Also yes, intentional, but insignificant. The whole game is a take on Ayn Rand's Objectivist views and her books.
