As I am a hater of online multiplayer in all it's various forms, but at the same time can appreciate that these games are fun for others; I have always wondered if the campaign mode in big multiplayer titles like Halo or CoD are even relevant anymore, hence the question.

Edit: This did have a poll but it timed out and didn't post. Bugger.

The poll question was whether you would still pay full price for the next instalment if the campaign was taken out?

To most who play, not really.

To a few, yes. I for one play Halo for the story.

I don't play Halo, but I can admit I do NOT buy CoD games for the campaign. I might eventually play them but when I bought MW2 the first thing I did was login to multiplayer.

This.

The campaign, for me, is the main reason I play games. I play Halo's multiplayer quite a bit, but I got it for the campaign - a campaign I've played through 5 times, so far. And besides, even if you don't care about singleplayer, you can get used to the controls and weapons there, so it will always be relevant.

EDIT: No, I wouldn't pay full price for Halo if it didn't have singleplayer. The very diea seems intrinsically wrong to me. Bungie has always cared about the story, even if some of the fans don't. I can't ever imagine a Halo game without a campaign.

Well, it depends on the person. Some people just play the campaign, some play just the multiplayer, but most at least dabble in both.

So, yeah. Pretty relevant.

I always play the Campaign first.

I don't mind a sub-par campaign if the multiplayer is good. But I don't think I would buy a game without a campaign, it just wouldn't fleel like a complete product.

Well, at least I wouldn't pay £40 for it.

I play Halo for the campaign.
I play Call of Duty for the multiplayer (though I always beat the campaign first)
I play Battlefield: Bad Company for... both!

So... in order to answer the question would I buy if the campaign was taken out? 1. No. 2. Wouldn't buy another one anyway. 3. I would be majorly disappointed, but would still buy.

And an example of a popular multiplayer only game is Team Fortress 2.

I love single player, for me multiplayer is an occasional fun, but I don't put the time in to do well enough consistently enough to enjoy it.

I guess, though, it depends on my expectations of the game - there are a couple of multiplayer concepts that I would pay top dollar for. Current incarnations of the FPS genre is not one of them.

I agree with this sentiment, but I have heard people say that a lot of people will buy an FPS just so they are playing the same game as their friends and if that was true then the campaign becomes irrelevant.

So far it is nice to see so many people still demanding a good single payer experience.

Same thing, except it's Call Of Duty and I play it for the set pieces.

I can generally guarantee you that when I really get into the multiplayer of a CoD game, it's already completed three times, among which a Veteran run and an Intel-collection run.

I usually enjoy the singleplayer side of shooters more. Except for Bad Company 2, because DICE just can't make a singleplayer that wouldn't be a crushing dissapointment compared to the online part.

Fucking dust, snipers and rocket launchers.

Yes, it's still relevant. The campaign of MW2 was infinitely better then the multiplayer, for example.
Ditto.

Multiplayer - just "okay". Singleplayer - best five ten fifteen twenty hours of my gaming life.

The spec ops were really fantastic, too.

Why would I? I bought the game to play against people online, so that's what I do. And no I don't buy CoD every year, I honestly only own MW2 currently and I am not going to buy Black Ops. As long as ppl still play MW2 I'll play it, maybe next years CoD I might pick up we'll see.

there is not a single shooter i own (or any other game for that matter) where i didnt first delve into the campaign before jumping into multiplayer. the only exception to this rule that i can think of is starcraft 2, mainly because i was in the beta and it was only multiplayer but also because most of my frends who were on the fence about playing this game needed to be pulled in so i helped by playing 2v2s with them or 1v1 for fun, just goofin around

Depends, I usually give more of a crap about multiplayer personally, unless I know the campaign is something worth checking out.

Medal of Honor's campaign was great. I wish there were more people online though. There are 20 or so games of team assault, less for objective games. The online is surprisingly less k/d oriented and people actually go for objectives. I just wish there were more people. Wait, back on topic. CoD and Halo suck campaign-wise in my opinion. CoD's campaign would make a better action movie, and Halo is WW2 in space, so its not very interesting to me.

Only if the time spent to make the singleplayer normally actually was used to improve the multiplayer. If a new CoD/Halo/MoH came out with no campaign, I don't want the same multiplayer as before with new guns/maps/gimmicks that make it worse/graphics, I want it to actually feel better, not different.
